94-Point Cote-Rotie Reserve from Ogier

Ogier Cote-Rotie 2012 Header
Highly rated Cote-Rotie...

Situated immediately south of Vienne, the Côte Rôtie is the Rhone Valley's northernmost appellation, and one of its smallest. The steep hillsides (côtes) here rise sharply from the banks of the River Rhone to heights of 330 metres. They form 10 narrow ridges no more than 600 metres wide, each separated from the next by a narrow, tree-lined gully. The ridges run roughly north-east to south-west.

Côte Rôtie wines are renowned for being elegant and finely structured, with complex aromas typical of the local terroir and of the Syrah grape variety from which they are made. As is the case in Crozes-Hermitage, an addition of up to 20% of the white variety Viognier is permitted under the appellation law, and producers often take full advantage of this to bring elegance and balance to their wines.

Stephane Ogier own some 17 parcels scattered across the Cote-Rotie terroirs. He says " In fact, the Côte-Rôtie is Burgundy on a smaller scale."

I have purchased a small parcel of the Cote-Rotie Reserve 2012 which we offer at the Pre Arrival Price of $135.00. It is a great expression of Northern Rhone Syrah.

Whiffs of smoke and bacon mingle into ripe plum, violet and chocolate on the nose of this lavish, perfumed wine. Chock-full of crisp-tart black-cherry and plum flavors, it's delightfully fresh and peppery on the palate. The finish is intensely mineral and long, edged by chalky but persistent tannins. It's drinking well now but should improve till 2028 and hold further. 94 Points

Vinous - Josh Raynolds: Tasted first in components: #1, from Beute du Mont, which is just above Maison Rouge in Tupin: Fresh red fruit and floral aromas and flavors show good energy and pick up a spicy quality with aeration. Bright and sharply focused, finishing with good clarity and cut. #2, from Fontgeant: Riper, spicier and darker in character, with a hint of white pepper adding bite. Becomes more floral with air and finishes with lingering sweetness and impressive cling. #3, from Bertholon, a new vineyard for Ogier that abuts Grandes Places: potent blackberry and cherry aromas, with a strong mineral overtone. Chewy and focused, offering very good depth to its bitter cherry and cassis flavors. Turns fleshier on the finish, showing velvety tannins and a touch of violet. #4, from Cote Blonde, also a new holding for the estate: The most vibrant and graceful of these barrels, offering intense red berry and floral qualities and a silky, seamless texture. Extremely mineral on the long, tightly focused finish. The tentative blend that will make it into bottle looks to be distinctly graceful, with energetic raspberry and floral pastille aromas and flavors giving way to deeper cherry and blackberry with air. Concentrated but also lithe on the bright, mineral-dominated finish. 92-94 Points

John Gilman, View from the Cellar:
The 2012 Côte-Rôtie "Réserve" from Stéphane Ogier is impressively low octane, coming in at 12.5 percent alcohol. The wine is made from a variety of lieux à dits, with the vines averaging forty years of age and the wine is raised in twenty percent new wood. This cuvée includes seventy percent whole clusters. The 2012 Réserve offers up an excellent, youthful bouquet of red and black raspberries, pepper, spiced meats, a fine touch of stems, complex soil tones, incipient nuttiness and a deft framing of new oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full bodied and nascently complex, with a superb core, very good soil signature, fine-grained tannins and excellent length and grip on the youthful and well-balanced finish. This is far less new oaky in personality than the wines of the decade of the 1990s here, and I really like that change. This will be a very elegant bottle of Côte-Rôtie when it is fully mature. 2024-2060. 92 Points
