History repeats!
A rare new-old release from Domaine de la Solitude

In March 2017 I attended Prowein in Dusseldorf. It is an enormous wine show with thousands of exhibitors. It is awe inspiring!

Solitude Florent Vineyard At the show I met with Florent Lancon from Domaine de la Solitude. Florent had taken over the reins at this ancient estate from his father and uncle.

Domaine de la Solitude is a rarity in Chateauneuf du Pape as the domaine has one single holding of 38 hectares all situated in the lieu-dit called La Solitude, adjacent to the famed rocky plateau of La Crau (the most precocious terroir of the appellation). Most estates' parcels are spread throughout the appellation, so this is a rare occurrence indeed. It is also one of the oldest estates in Chateauneuf du Pape, tracing its history back to the 13th century with no less than a Pope in the family tree! Domaine de la Solitude has been run by the Lancon family for many decades and was one of the first domaines to estate-bottle.

At the show Florent showed me a new cuvee he had produced after a discussion with France's most famous wine critic, Michel Bettane. The idea was to produce a wine in the style of the late 19th century when the climatic conditions, grape varieties grown and style of wines produced were quite different to today. Vinification was far from what is common place today and there was not a skerrick of new oak to be seen in the cuverie. Let me just say that the wine was tremendous.

When I visited the domaine in September last year I again tasted the wine. Once again it was off the charts. Florent showed me the labels being considered. He had a selection of old Solitude labels from a century or more ago and they were his inspiration.

The cuvee has been a secret for over a year and I have been quietly biding my time waiting for more news. Recently Florent advised me that it has now been bottled. He has chosen an old fashioned "Burgundy" bottle to complement the ancient style label.

There are just 1000 bottles for the world and we are very fortunate to have an allocation for our Australian clients.

The Vin de la Solitude Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2016 comes packed in a prestigious 3-Bottle Wooden case. The 2016 vintage is being described as the greatest of the last 30 years.

A historic and most interesting release. With only 1000 bottles produced we have a very limited quantity to sell. If you wish to secure some bottles please act quickly. The Wooden case of 3 bottles is available at a 15% Pre Arrival Discount.

Vin de la Solitude label Brilliant ruby. A suave, expansive bouquet evokes fresh dark berries, candied flowers and smoky minerals, backed by a hint of peppery spices. In an elegant yet concentrated style, offering seamless black raspberry and spicecake flavors that show very good depth as well as clarity. Juicy acidity adds lift and definition to a very long, floral-accented finish framed by velvety, harmonious tannins.

Christmas in July. Burgundy Lunch at Ryne
What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon in Melbourne than at our Christmas in July Burgundy Lunch at Ryne?

Settle in with no less than 14 different bottles of Burgundy and a 4-course lunch cooked by Ryne Chef Donovan Cooke.

We'll start off with a glass of Domaine Jean Durup Chablis 1er Cru L'Homme Mort 2014 with canapes. A curious name indeed and the subject of much conjecture as to its origins. Then we have a bracket of three Premier Cru whites, two of which are from the newly arrived 2016 vintage.

Before we hit the serious reds we'll taste the Domaine Chevillon-Chezeaux Coteaux Bourguignons 2015. Made from 100% Gamay from Vosne-Romanee and Nuits-St-Georges it is a super drink for the price.

No Burgundy lunch would be complete without some reds. A lot of them! We have three brackets of 3 Red Burgundies, each from a different commune and maker. Compare, discuss and pick your favourite. Eight of the 9 wines are Premier Crus. There will be some beauties.

Date: Sunday 29 July 2018
Time: 12.30pm
Venue: Ryne, 203 St Georges Rd, Fitzroy North 3065
Cost: $175.00 per person
