Domaine Bruno Desaunay-Bissey is a name that is familar to many Burgundy drinkers in Australia.

The family own parcels of very old vines in and around Vosne-Romanee. Since 2007 Bruno has not used herbicides or pesticides, all the soil being tilled. Bruno's winemaking is very terroir-expressive, doing short pre-fermentation maceration, using indigenous yeasts, and not too much extraction. Barrel-aging is about 1/3 new except for more with the Grands Crus. The wines are neither fined nor filtered. The result is beautifully balanced, perfumed, textured, complex, lingering Burgundies.

I paid my first visit to the domaine earlier this year. I tasted the 2016's which were mighty impressive. Whilst I wait for them to come to fruition I have a small quantity of the 2015's available.

Basically an extension of the Grand Cru Echezeaux climat En Orveaux. The vines here are almost a century old.

The vineyard produces very stylish wines.

The Premier Cru Les Rouges lies immediately above the Echezeaux climats Les Champs Traversins and Les Rouges du Bas - not a bad location! The soil is full of tiny pebbles and the cool breeze means that the grapes ripen two weeks after most of Echezeaux. Desaunay-Bissey's vines are around 80 years of age.

Les Beamonts is located high on the slope above Echezeaux, Les Suchots and Richebourg. It produces cool-fruited, pure wines which can be quite exceptional.

The domaine's vines are 80 years old.

Desaunay-Bissey own just 0.15 hectares spread between the climats Les Champs Traversins and Les Quartiers de Nuits. The later is an unusual appellation as when you look at a map it is appears that it should be part of the Clos Vougeot climat Petit Maupertui except that it has been otherwise removed and left outside the Clos' wall. Politics?

The domaine's vines are over 110 years of age and this is their only Grand Cru. The jewel in their crown.

What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon in Melbourne than at our Christmas in July Burgundy Lunch at Ryne?
Settle in with no less than 14 different bottles of Burgundy and a 4-course lunch cooked by Ryne Chef Donovan Cooke. 
We'll start off with a glass of Domaine Jean Durup Chablis 1er Cru L'Homme Mort 2014 with canapes. A curious name indeed and the subject of much conjecture as to its origins. Then we have a bracket of three Premier Cru whites, two of which are from the newly arrived 2016 vintage.
Before we hit the serious reds we'll taste the Domaine Chevillon-Chezeaux Coteaux Bourguignons 2015. Made from 100% Gamay from Vosne-Romanee and Nuits-St-Georges it is a super drink for the price.
No Burgundy lunch would be complete without some reds. A lot of them! We have three brackets of 3 Red Burgundies, each from a different commune and maker. Compare, discuss and pick your favourite. Eight of the 9 wines are Premier Crus. There will be some beauties.
For those of you who don't know Donovan he has quite a CV. Starting in Europe, he worked his way through the Savoy Hotel, Waterside Inn in Bray, Harvey's in London and La Cote St Jacques in Burgundy. In 1997 he shifted his focus to Melbourne where he co-opened the highly influential restaurant Est Est Est, followed by Luxe (awarded 3 hats in its first year) and Ondine (Best New Restaurant, The Age Good Food Guide).
Donovan was presented with the reigns of the Derby Restaurant and Bar at The Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club. He served as Chef de Cuisine for the next 6 and a half years. He has now returned to Melbourne to start this new venture - Ryne. To view Ryne's website click here.
