Introducing Domaine Francois Buffet
 
Bill Nanson, The Burgundy Report: "Here are super underground cellars - something of a luxury in Volnay - a warren of rooms, some containing older vintages - "Helpful to offset some of the missing volume from the last years:" says Marc-Olivier Buffet. These are damp cellars like Lafarge - don't touch something for a while and it will disappear under the penecillium....

Marc-Olivier describes this as a "small domaine of 8 hectares, in the fmaily for centuries." Francois was Marc-Olivier's grandfather, Marc-Olivier taking the domaine on from his father, Jacques, in 2005. They produce eleven 1er crus including wines from as far-afield as Savigny and Pernand - they have 6 in Volnay.

Marc-Olivier explains that it is mainly small volumes of each cuvee as the vines are 'vieilles-vignes'. 2 from 3 vintages are Bio, but they reserve the prerogative to occasionally use something 'synthetic'. Some parcels are even managed 'biodynamically', but Marc-Olivier says that he's not prepared to take the risk every year."

To officially introduce Domaine Francois Buffet to our portfolio we offer the full range of 2016 Premier Cru Volnay at a 25% Pre Arrival Discount (there was no Carelle sous la Chapelle in 2016 due to the frost). The domaine is small and in 2016 quantities were smaller than usual.

When I visited the domaine earlier this year they had already sold out of numerous 2016's. After some discussion the domaine found me small quantities of the sold out wines so we are able to present the full range, allbeit in tiny quantities. Unfortunately, I did not taste some of these wines so we have no notes.

This is a fine address to compare 1er Cru Volnay.
Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chenes 2016

Darren Harris: The deepest and darkest of the wines tasted, not surprisingly as this is one of Volnay's greatest vineyards. The nose has aromas of red and black berries with more concentration. The palate is long and powerful with plenty of acid and tannin driving the wine to a long finish. Very good indeed.

Jancis Robinson: 
Firm, pale crimson. Light, slightly vegy nose with excellent suave fruit on the palate with fine tannins and much more ambition than the Clos de la Rougeotte. Lots to savour here. Quite long. 16.5/20

Jancis Robinson:
Noticeably paler than the Clos des Chênes. Light nose and drier on the palate (as in less sweet rather than drying) than its stablemates. Masses of texture and energy. Clean and expressive. Lots to chew on. A real mouthful of interest and not nearly resolved yet. Considerable, fine tannins. 17/20
Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Rougeotte Monopole 2016

Darren Harris: Buffet's Monopole is just half a hectare in size. More aromatic and layered than Le Village with strong notes of raspberry and minerals. The palate builds in the middle with juicy fruit followed by a reasonably firm finish.

Jancis Robinson: 
This is the family's monopole. Wines, made only 10 hl/ha thanks to the frost, were aged for 22 months in oak. 
Light nose - not sure it qualifies as 'delicate'. There's a light graphite note and flattering round fruit. It seems a tad simple at the moment but certainly almost approachable. Just a bit of dryness on the end. 16/20

Volnay 1er Cru Le Village 2016

Buffet Village label Darren Harris: Refined nose of wild strawberry, stones and flowers. The most elegant 1er Cru here with lifted aromatics and a very supple palate. Juicy and very tasty.

Buffet Champans Label Considered by many to be the greatest vineyard of Volnay but, alas, the wine was sold out when I visited. The domaine did find me a few cases so I am able to offer it. 

Buffet have 0.47 hectares with a vine age of 66 years.

Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Rougeotte Monopole 1996

Marc-Olivier Buffet is justifiably proud of the domaine's 0.52 hectare Monopole Clos de la Rougeotte. The vineyard produces wines that are aromatic, redolent with raspberries and minerals. Not as obvious or powerful as Champans or Clos des Chenes, Clos de la Rougeotte is layered and intricate. At 22 years of age this wine, direct from the domaine's cold 18th century cellars, will be hitting its straps.

The history of this vineyard goes back to 1252! For centuries it has been regarded as one of the top sites in Volnay no doubt due to its very stony, red-brown soil and excellent drainage. Jasper Morris MW says "It is quintessential Volnay" and I agree. 2005 is also regarded by many as the finest vintage of the last 40 plus years. We have 8 bottles of this wine available. Straight from the domaine's cellar. A rare opportunity to secure a perfectly cellared 2005 Premier Cru at a great price.
