Arriving soon but almost gone! Domaine Christophe Vaudoisey. Lovely 2016 Volnay Premier Crus at

Vaudoisey 2016 1er Cru Header
Three top 2016 Premier Crus from Volnay at wonderful prices

I'm always on the hunt for quality wines at appealing prices. Last year we imported a little 2015 Volnay from Domaine Christophe Vaudoisey. They were simply delicious.

So this trip I have visited the domaine and tasted through their full range of 2016's. If anything they are even better - the pure, fresh character of the 2016 vintage really suiting their style.

The Vaudoisey family came to Volnay in 1804. In recent years it is Christophe, the eighth generation, who has taken the domaine to new levels. He took over the domaine from his father in 1985, built a new winery in 2008, and from then on the wines have received many accolades from Guide Hachette and other French publications.

To officially introduce the domaine to our portfolio we offer the full range of 2016's at a 25% Pre Arrival Discount. Today I focus on their three Premier Cru Volnays. You can view and read tasting notes for the full range of our website here.

These wines are wonderful value at just $87.95 a bottle. Premier Crus are rarely this affordable. Pop a mixed case in the cellar and drink over the next decade. The wines are about to leave France and will arrive in Australia late next month.
Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans 2016

Vaudoisey Mitans Label
Les Mitans is a 3.98 hectare vineyard on the eastern side of the village. It was first mentioned in the records in 1236. The vineyard has light, stony topsoil and produces one of Volnay's most elegant and delicate expressions.

Darren Harris: Nose of raspberry, myrtle, violets and smoke. Plenty of dry extract with pure fruit and mineral notes. Lacy. The most elegant of the three 1er Crus with great style and balance.
Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chenes 2016

Vaudoisey Chenes Label
Clos des Chenes is both large in size and personality. It is regarded as one of Volnay's top premier crus producing a rich and powerful wine with a nose featuring violets, a signature of this vineyard. Concentrated and built to age.
Darren Harris:  Less aromatic than Le Mitans - this is about structure and power. Earth, spice and minerals. Deep with more defined tannins. Complex, long and built to cellar. Impressive!
Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets 2016
Landed Price $117.50
Pre Arrival Price $87.95
29 bottles left

Vaudoisey Caillerets Label Caillerets is beautifully exposed to the south and east, moderately sloped, and is extremely highly regarded by the locals. As the name suggests the soil is full of small stones which aid drainage and reflect heat.
Darren Harris: Still in barrel. Dark berries, a hint of kirsch, a note of dark chocolate. Cool, pure and fresh. Very complex with stony minerality and long, fine tannins. Quite lovely.

Alvear speclialize in Pedro Ximinez, particularly the rich, intense, sweet wine that the grape variety produces. This Pedro Ximinez is a solera wine begun in 1927. Occasionally wine is drawn off and the younger wines stored in the upper parts of the tier of casks are systematically blended with the more mature wine in the casks below.

Robert Parkers' Wine Advocate: (2015) The NV Pedro Ximenez Solera 1927 is non-vintage, but does have some 1927 material in it. This is totally dark brown/amber with notes of figs, toffee, caramel syrup, molasses and coffee. It is dense, super sweet, intense, rich and an amazingly, unctuously textured, thick beverage to consume slowly and introspectively after a meal. Drink now through 2050, or even longer. 98 Points
