2016 Clos Saint-Denis from Bertagna - A Stunning Grand Cru

Bertagna denis 2016 Header
A great followup to the also superb 2015 Clos-St-Denis

Domaine Bertagna is 21 hectares in size with 18 different appellations. In a normal vintage they have 4 Grand Crus and 7 Premier Crus.
I have followed the domaine for about 20 years. A year or so back I was offered the opportunity to import the wines. A visit and extensive tasting provided plenty of reasons to add the domaine to our portfolio and we shipped the tremendous 2015 vintage.
Bertagna EvaThe wines were very well received. Their Grand Cru Chambertin and Clos St-Denis along with interesting vineyards like their monopole Vougeot 1er Cru Clos de la Perriere really piqued the interest of Burgundy lovers and sold out rapidly.
Sadly, in 2016 the domaine's Chambertin was destroyed by frost and there was no production. However, their Clos St-Denis was spared and today we feature this wine.
The domaine has a significant 0.53 hectares from which they produce a wine of admirable intensity and precision.

The 2015 was a showstopper and I feel the 2016 is at least as good - the lower alcohol allowing more lifted aromatics without a loss in the old vine intensity.

The domaine has not encouraged critics in recent years which is a shame as the wines, across the board, are tremendous. The good news is that the lack of attention means we were able to secure a significant allocation of the 2016's.
The Clos St-Denis is deeply coloured, powerful and very ageworthy. Like the 2015 it has much immediate appeal but is really a wine for the cellar.
We offer it at a 15% Pre Arrival discount.

Bertagna Denis Label
Darren HarrisVery dense red-purple. An enticing nose of bright, fresh fruit, with much spice and a touch of graphite. The palate is multi-layered with deep fruit flavours and more spicy elements. Intense but not heavy. There is oak but it is coated by such tremendous fruit that the impression is of silkiness. Balanced and precise with a tangy note that Bertagna (and indeed most Clos St-Denis) shows every vintage. From 50 year old vines and built to age. My favourite wine at Bertagna (again).

Lignier Clos-St-Denis label
Domaine Georges Lignier Clos-St-Denis Grand Cru 2016
A great comparison with the wine alongside. Both are terrific but are made in very different styles.
Tim Atkin MW: The domaine's holdings of Clos St Denis are comparatively extensive at 1.49 hectares. This was showing a little reduction when I tasted it in Burgundy and again in London, so it needs time in bottle. Showing the classic freshness of the Grand Cru, it's a balanced, subtle, focused wine with loganberry and red cherry fruit and savoury tannins. 2026-34.

Vinous: Stephen Tanzer:
(half of these vines are 70 years old, the other half 60): Moderately saturated medium red. Musky, soil-driven scents of fresh red fruits, crushed rock, flint and rose petal. Penetrating and sharply delineated, offering terrific intensity to its flavors of red berries, sappy cherry, minerals and blood orange. At once salty and juicy, this very long wine leaves the palate perfumed. Stehly compares this wine to a Musigny in its youthful strictness, and it strikes me as a classic young Clos Saint-Denis that will need time in bottle to expand. Stehly used to work mostly with spicy Cadus barrels for this wine but now uses one-third each Berthomieu and Tonnelerie du Val du Loire for his Clos Saint-Denis, as he feels these barrels are at once sweeter and more delicate.

Jancis Robinson:
1.49 ha! 40% new oak. He recently changed oak sources. He is the biggest owner of the 6.3 ha. 45- to 70-year-old vines, always blended.
Limpid ruby. Good density with a mentholated note. Rich and powerful and layered and really rather majestic. Real beginning, middle and end. Subtle. Long and layered. Excellent balance. He says this best expresses what he wants to do. 17.5/20
