Domaine Doudet was founded in 1849. Over 150 years later it is still in the hands of the same family and is presently run by Isabelle Doudet.
The estate owns vineyards in some of the Cote de Beaune's best sites with vineyards in Aloxe-Corton, Beaune, Savigny-les-Beaune and Pernand Vergelesses. They include some very old vines.
Organic methods are used and the best vineyards are still ploughed by horse!
I was introduced to the wines at the Grands Jours de Bourgogne earlier this year. I was impressed with what I saw and visited the domaine to taste the full range of 2010s (and some 2011s).
Once again the new generation has seen an old domaine move ahead in leaps and bounds. Isabelle's wines are true to terroir and serious in style. They do not receive much press from the English speaking world but are prolific prize winners in France. I like to see that as I am very confident that the wines are tasted blind and the decisions are from an experienced panel.
All of the wines were excellent but it was the Corton Marechaudes Grand Cru Vielle Vigne that impressed me most. With the assistance of the strong Australian Dollar we are able to offer it at a Pre Arrival Price of less than $100.00! That is incredible value for a Grand Cru from the classic 2010 vintage.
2010 Domaine Doudet Corton Marechaudes Vielle Vigne Grand Cru
Normal Price $119.00
Pre Arrival Price $99.95
Explosive, complex nose of cherries, marzipan, kirsch and spice. The wine builds through the mid palate with plenty of extract and a fine texture. There is excellent energy and freshness. The finish is stony, mineral and defined with the tannins well in balance. This is another seriously good Corton rouge from 2010.
You can't beat old vines! No doubt they have the effect of creating the fine texture and great finish.
If you love the Dubreuil-Fontaine Corton Reds I suggest you give this wine serious consideration. It is another Corton Grand Cru vineyard producing classic wine but with its own distinct terroir. And once again it is tremendous value for a 2010 Grand Cru.
You can view and order the wine on line by clicking here.
You can also view more award-winning wines from the domaine including Corton-Charlemagne and some very interesting Premier Crus including the "little brother" Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru Les Marechaudes Vieille Vigne.
Orders may also be placed by telephone or email. Delivery will be later this year.
