Only a few cases of each remaining. Three highly rated Vintages of Corton Les Rognet Grand Cru f

Three serious vintages to compare

One exercise I am greatly looking forward to is the comparison of vintages 2014, 2015 and 2016. All three have produced reds of serious quality but each vintage has its own, distinct character. Which will be my favourite? I really do not know.

Another discovery from my recent travels is Domaine Arnoux Pere et Fils. This 20 hectare domaine has vineyards in Beaune, Chorey, Savigny, Pernand-Vergelesses, Aloxe-Corton and at the top of the tree Corton Les Rognet Grand Cru.

The domaine is run by fifth generation Pascal Arnoux who practices traditional viticulture. Pascal's father is a cooper but new oak plays a small part in the wines which are allowed to express their terroir.
The domaine was able to offer me a little Corton Les Rognet from 2014, 2015 and 2016 and today we present these wines. For Grand Cru Reds from three top vintages they are seriously good value, especially at our introductory 25% Pre Arrival Discount.
The 2015 has the top reviews but don't dismiss the 2014. As you may remember the critics were a little fast out of the gate and almost everyone has re-evaluated the vintage in a very positive manner. Many winemakers consider their 2014's to be superior to their 2015's. We are just a little early for reviews of the 2016.
My suggestion is to do what I plan to do - grab a little of each and compare them in a few years time.
Great value for Grand Cru Red Burgundy!

Wine Spectator:
A dark and somber red, featuring black cherry, plum and pomegranate flavors. A touch heavy on the extraction, with dense, dusty tannins and an aftertaste of earth and spice. Sweet fruit reigns on the finish. Best from 2019 through 2033. 92 Points

Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast:
This wine comes from a one-acre parcel on the Corton hill. It is dense and dark both in color and in black-fruit flavors. Concentrated from the 50-year-old vines, it is firm with tannins and solid with rich fruitiness. The wine needs time; drink from 2022. 93 Points

Wine Spectator:
Dark and lush, this red verges on jammy, with black cherry and black currant fruit shaded by violet and spice accents. A line of tannins marks the long finish, which shows density and structure. Best from 2020 through 2038. 95 Points

Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast:
This is the Arnoux family's top wine coming from vines on the revered hill of Corton. It is a powerful wine, properly rich and structured from the vintage. Wood and spice come through although they will soon integrate with the dense black-plum fruits and mineral texture. Drink the wine from 2025. 95 Points

Seguin-Manuel 2016 Corton header
Stunning Corton Rognet 2016 from Seguin-Manuel
My March visit to Seguin-Manuel presented the opportunity for me to taste their 2016's. At the very top of the tree was a stunning Corton Rognets Grand Cru Red. This is a new cuvee for Seguin-Manuel and it was an absolute cracker. We all know that Corton has gone ahead in leaps and bounds over the last decade and this wine was simply one of the best I have tasted.

Unfortunately for Grand Cru lovers only one barrel was produced. So there are just 288 bottles for the world. Such a shame when a wine is this good!
Darren Harris: 45 year old vines. 100% destemmed. One cask produced. New oak to start then into an older barrel. Deep red-garnet. Glorious nose of cherry, graphite, mocha, earth and stone. The nuances trade places as the wine sits in the glass. With air we see more spice. The fresh juice that is a hallmark of 2016 is present and very appealing. The palate is beautifully formed with with a suave level of extract coating the mouth and fine grained tannins leading to long and complex finish without dryness. A great combination of new and old Corton winemaking that could not fail to impress. Easily the equal of serious Grand Crus from the Cote de Nuits in both style and quality. A simply super 2016 and highly recommended.

Pvillon Corton 2015 Header

Domaine du Pavillon Corton Clos des Marechaudes Grand Cru MONOPOLE 2015

Gold Medal and Trophy for the Best Corton at the International Wine Challenge 2017. "Wild and breezy with bright bramble fruit and a lovely rounded but dense palate. Classic, stony Corton fruit with a lovely balance between richness and invigorating freshness."

Tim Atkin MW: Located in the same clos as the Premier Cru of the same name, this comes from the upper part of the vineyards where the soils are very poor indeed. It's a very pure expression of the Grand Cru, with pepper spice and red berry flavours, chalky acidity and fine tannins, especially for a Corton. 2024-30. 94 Points
