The ancestors of Domaine Jean Durup have been winemakers since 1560! Over the centuries the estate has grown and is now the largest in Chablis.

The state of the art winery produces classically styled Chablis without any oak.

Austin Biss, author of A Guide to the Wines of Chablis says "Such quality wine making and elevage with the minimum of interference produces a fine result - wines of typicite, fruity and flinty, with a flowery aroma and wines that can age well developing a delicious honeyed biscuity nose."

The Durups have an impressive and interesting array of Premier Crus including Montee de Tonnerre, Fourchaume, Montmains, Vau de Vay and the sinisterly named L'Homme Mort. They also make a cuvee named Reine Mathilde which is a blend of special 1er Cru parcels.

This is another terrific producer discovered during my trip to France in 2016 and we are pleased to offer their wonderful 2016's which are now in stock.
All wines are available at a 15% Pre Discount this week. Quantities are low. We feature 3 popular Premier Crus below.

Durup Montee Label

If you are a Chablis fan I am sure you love Montee de Tonnerre.

Located alongside the Grand Crus it is universally acknowledged as the best of the Premier Crus producing a wine with an additional layer of complexity. Some say it should be elevated to Grand Cru.

Darren Harris: Classic saline Chablis nose with a little citrus and lots of minerals. The palate continues the theme with real intensity and freshness culminating in a long mineral finish. Stylish and lip smacking. Drink now until 2028 and perhaps beyond.

Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume 2016
Normally $64.95
Special Price $54.95

Durup Fourchaume Label Fourchaume is the largest of the right bank Premier Crus. The well drained soils produce aromatic wines that are flinty andmineral.

Darren Harris: Classic nose of salty ozone. The palate is crisp with yellow citrus, oyster shell, crushed rock and spice. Tangy. Very persistent in the mouth. Long and very stylish. Great Chablis.

Chablis 1er Cru L'Homme Mort 2016
Normally $64.95
Special Price $54.95

DSurup Homme Mort Label L'Homme Mort is a climat of the Premier Cru Fourchaume. Austin Biss, in his standard reference A Guide to the Wines of Chablis says "L'Homme Mort, a climat within  Fourchaume, is located at the northern end towards Maligny and is a special favourite particularly in the hands of Domaine Jean Durup who own a large parcel - the wine displays an attractive earthy flavour with an added dimension. Jean-Paul says that the name is attributed to the number of miscreants buried there after being hanged near the Chateau de Maligny just up the road, before he took over that is".

Others say that the vineyard gets its name from the fact that there used to be a small cemetery at the entrance to this valley, part of the neighboring Roman settlement. A few sarcophagi containing skeletons from the Merovingian era were uncovered here, and as with many other places in France, this discovery gave rise to the name of L'Homme Mort (dead man).

Darren Harris: Tangerine, a hint of musk, rose water. Something intriguing and faintly exotic. Nice breadth and texture on the palate with fine, lingering acidity. Long and complex.

Bouley Santenots 2015 Label
Domaine Pascal Bouley Volnay 1er Cru Santenots MAGNUM 2015 - Save over $130.00
4 available
Hail hit some of the vineyards of Volnay hard in 2015 and the losses were significant. Domaine Pascal Bouley suffered enormously. When the grapes in the their Santenots vineyard were crushed there was just enough for half a barrel. A crazy 150-160 bottles.

But the fruit was spectacular in true Santenots style. It was dark, deep and concentrated with a wonderful spine so the Bouley's made a serious decision. They decided to bottle the entire production en MAGNUM.

Instead of the usual 1000 or so bottles from a regular vintage in 2015 there are 80 Magnums. Full stop. For the entire world. 36 of these made their way to Australia.

Those of you who drink Volnay regularly will know that Santenots is one of the top Premier Cru vineyards. Jasper Morris MW says "This has always been a highly-reputed site amongst the Volnay premier crus, rated as Tete de Cuvee by both Lavalle and Rodier - though the wines really need to age to show their merit." "There is noticeably more clay in the soil in Les Santenots than for most of Volnay, giving wines of full body and rich texture, though without the tannins of Pommard."

I'd like to draw your attention to the majesty of this wine with a very special offer. The normal price for this Magnum is $332.95. We have 4 left in the warehouse which we offer at the attention grabbing price of $199.00. That's a 38% savings. Magnums were designed for extended ageing and this wine doesn't ask for it - it demands it! So If you have the patience and love serious Burgundy I urge you to grab a magnum or two. It will be at its peak between 2027 and 2037.

Bill Nanson "The Burgundy Report"
From Santenots Blanc - 'When grandfather bought it, it was indeed planted to white but eventually he decided to change.'
The Santenots was a tiny cuvée, already bottled at the harvest as it was so small, but in magnums!
Darren Harris: Extraordinarily saturated purple-black
colour. Bright. Alive! Lifted nose of dark fruit, currants, spice and some new oak. Flowery notes linger in the background. Dense and muscular with an intensity seldom seen. There are minerals on the palate and a suave, silky mouthfeel culminating with defined tannins. This is a powerful, complex Volnay built to age. The choice to bottle the entire production in magnums (80 for the world) is certainly justified. Patience will be required to see this wine at its peak.
