Smith-Woodhouse 2016 Port Header
"The 2016 vintage may prove to be a modern legend for vintage Port." James Suckling

He goes on to say "The 2016 vintage Ports exhibit fantastic depth and concentration yet at the same time they show a sheer tannin backbone that gives them great form and class. They have a cooler, less ripe nature to them compared to the extremely rich 2011s, 2003s and 2000s. The 2016s seem more in line with the racier 2007s but perhaps with slightly more intensity." "....
the superb quality comes through in these young Ports, and they are surprisingly impressive to taste now. They are not like the young vintage Ports I tasted at the beginning of my career in the early 1980s, which were big, raw and powerful. The 2016s are much more finished and refined; they exemplify strength and form. It suggests that they can be consumed slightly younger, perhaps in five to eight years, but they will continue to age beautifully for decades ahead. Maybe the 2016 is the new 1963 - a legendary year that was always admired for its balance and strength."

Jancis Robinson said "The 2016 vintage ports also seemed particularly good at showing the characteristic individual personalities of each offering (although admittedly we did not taste blind). And I was particularly struck by the exceptional depth of colour in the Symington wines." "The 2016s seemed to me a fine showcase for the continued sophistication of port (and Douro) winemaking. They were on the whole beautifully made, with the tannins so necessary for a wine as long-lived as port almost hidden in most cases by a massive welter of ripe fruit. These ports weren't always extremely sweet, and indeed their abiding characteristic was freshness, perhaps the consequence of a relatively late harvest (in the best cases) when nights were relatively cool."

The Symington Family Estates has declared 2016 as a vintage across all of its Port properties, the first time it has issued a general declaration since 2011. Our first offer is for Smith-Woodhouse. This house was acquired by the Symingtons in 1970 along with Grahams.

Charles Symington said the resulting wines are described as "exceptional" with tannins that are "among the most refined ever, beautiful red-fruit flavours with extraordinary intense, purple colour."

The report continued: "They have impressive structure and balance, with Baumés, acidity, tannins and colour in rare and perfect alignment. This is no doubt a result of the later ripening cycle which allowed our grapes to mature evenly and completely.
"Production of each of our 2016 Vintage Ports is approximately 1/5 below our previous declared vintage following rigorous selection in the tasting room."

Only 1,500 Cases of the Smith-Woodhouse Vintage Port 2016 have been produced. This is a very small bottling and represents the very best production from Smith Woodhouse's Quinta da Madalena vineyard.
The Smith Woodhouse 2016 Vintage Port is entirely based on the Madalena vineyard, primarily from the field blend of very old mixed vines. They cover just over half of the vineyard's 17 hectares, and in 2016, the yields of these Vinhas Velhas were exceptionally low, a meagre 200 grams per vine, practically one bunch from each vine. The remarkable depth and complexity of the wine reflect the concentration and structure provided by these  grapes. The remainder of Madalena is planted with Touriga Franca, a late ripening variety, well  suited to the conditions of the Rio Torto area where typically the crop takes longer to ripen. This component from Madalena, the Vinha das Flores - true to its name - provides distinctive floral  aromas of violets and rockrose.

James Suckling: This is extremely floral with dark fruit and plum character. Full-bodied, very tight and focused. It's a complete young vintage Port that is great from start to finish. Rio Torto fruit makes this great! Better in 2022. 96 Points

Symingtons: Aromas suggesting bergamot and tea-leaf, as well as floral aromas of rockrose and violets. Substantial on the palate, showing ripe, black fruit and liquorice. The seamless, peppery tannins give freshness and excellent structure.
