Utterly Brilliant Reds from the monumental 2016 vintage including the "potentially perfect" Chateauneuf-du-Pape Reserve
Le Clos du Caillou, a 53 hectare wine estate with Côtes-du-Rhône and Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellations, is located in Courthézon in the South of France.

The property came in possession of the Pouizin family in 1956. Until 1996 the property was run by Claude Pouizin, who until 1993 sold most of his yield to negociants. In 1996 his daughter Sylvie and son-in-law Jean-Denis Vacherons took charge and the quality of the wines has skyrocketed.

The property has 9 hectares of AOC Chateauneuf-du-Pape. These are on the sandier soils of the appellation's northeast sector in the lieux-dits of Les Bedines, Guigasse and Pignan, right alongside Rayas.

The domain also makes extraordinarily good Cotes du Rhone from 44 ha of vineyards. The Cotes du Rhone Bouquet des Garrigues comes from fields just outside the border of AOC Chateauneuf-du- Pape. The story goes that in the 1930's, the owner, armed with a hunting rifle, refused to receive experts seeking to delimit the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Thus, Clos du Caillou remains a kind of enclave, with many of the very old vines classified as Cotes-du-Rhone, rather than Chateauneuf-du-Pape, as they would have been!
Joe Czerwinski of Robert Parker's Wine Advocate says "On my visit, it was great to meet the young Marilou Vacheron, back to join the family estate after five years of business school, and the longtime (since 2002) winemaker Bruno Gaspard. The vineyards have been certified organic since 2010. Gaspard compares the 2016s to 2010 or 2005, he says, "but better."

If the reviews are anything to go by 2016 is going to be one of the legendary Chateauneuf-du-Pape vintages.

Earlier this week Marilou Vacheron contacted me about the domaine's new releases. We hadn't brought any of their wines into Australia for a few years. But when I read the reviews I had to say yes. It sounds like these will be some of the greatest wines produced in Chateauneuf-du-Pape for decades.

For a limited time, instead of the usual 15% Pre Arrival Discount, I offer the full range of wines at a 25% discount to welcome them back into our portfolio.

If you are a fan of great Southern Rhone reds you must act quickly and secure the wines you require. Make sure you take a look at the Cote-du-Rhones. The Reserve would, according to Robert Parker's Wine Advocate "mop the floor with many Châteauneufs."
Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Reserve 2016
Landed Price $299.00
Pre Arrival Price $224.00

Caillopu Chateauneuf Reserve Jeb Dunnuck:
Possessing a more discrete, nuanced style than the blockbuster-styled Cuvée Quarts, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve reveals a deep ruby color as well as more focused, pure notes of blackcurrants, graphite, crushed rock and mineral nuances. Just gorgeously pure, seamless, impeccably balanced and with a finish that won't quit, give this power-packed, concentrated 2016 4-5 years of bottle age and enjoy over the following two decades.
96-100 Points

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
The potentially perfect 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape La Reserve shows incredible depth and richness. A cavalcade of cherries and berries, dustings of dried spices and layers and layers of silky tannins flow and expand across the palate, suffusing it entirely. Breathtaking! 98-100 Points
Chateauneuf-du-Pape Les Quartz 2016
Landed Price $158.95
Pre Arrival Price $118.95
Caillou Chateauneuf Quartz
Jeb Dunnuck:
A blockbuster in the making is the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape les Quartz, which is 100% Grenache from the les Cassanets lieu-dit just beside the estate. Garrigue, kirsch, black raspberries, spice, and incense notes all literally soar from the glass of this sensational red. With full-bodied richness, incredible purity, ultra-fine tannin, and a killer finish, it's going to be one of the wines of the vintage.
96-99 Points

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
A prospective blend of the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Quartz showed waves of cherry fruit, rich, velvety tannins and a long, spice-driven finish. It's a complete wine, even at this embryonic stage, and should age up to two decades. 94-96 Points
Cotes-du-Rhone La Reserve Rouge 2016
Landed Price $81.95
Pre Arrival Price $61.50
Caillou CDR REserve
Jeb Dunnuck:
A total "Wow!" wine, the 2016 Côtes du Rhône Reserve (60/40 Grenache and Mourvèdre) boast knockout notes of blackcurrants, black raspberries, smoked herbs, licorice and crushed rock-like minerality. Big, rich, unctuous and layered, yet still fine and finesse-driven, drink this full-bodied powerhouse anytime over the coming decade or more. 95 Points

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
A potentially prodigious Côtes du Rhône, the 2016 Cotes du Rhone La Reserve boasts layers of dark, creamy, rich fruit, velvety tannins and a complex, spice-driven finish. It could mop the floor with many Châteauneufs. 92-94 Points

Cotes-du-Rhone Les Quartz 2016
Landed Price $60.95
Pre Arrival Price $45.50

Caillou CDR Quartz
Jeb Dunnuck:
The 2016 Côtes du Rhône Quartz offers a rare level of minerality and depth for a Côtes du Rhône, and anyone that loves southern Rhônes should buy bottles of this. Black raspberries, hints of cassis, crushed rock and dried garrigue characteristics flow to a rich, concentrated - even structured - effort that has the telltale elegance and purity of the estate. With ripe tannin, solid freshness and a great, great finish, it's going to drink nicely for a decade. 93 Points
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
The prospective blend of the 2016 Cotes du Rhone Les Quartz was slightly bigger, richer and more tannic than the Le Bouquet des Garrigues, but I'm not sure it will be better. Sometimes size extracts a price in elegance. 90-92 Points
Cotes-du-Rhone Bouquet des Garrigues Rouge 2016
Landed Price $47.50
Pre Arrival Price $35.50
Caillou CDE Garigues
Jeb Dunnuck: Tasted out of Foudre, the 2016 Côtes du Rhône les Garrigues is another winner. Strawberries, cherries, peppery herbs and hints of garrigue all emerge from this ripe, sexy, seriously layered Côtes du Rhône that has purity, elegance, and depth. Man, for a Côtes du Rhône, this beauty has serious richness. Buy it. 91 Points
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: The 2016 Cotes du Rhone Le Bouquet des Garrigues was presented as a prospective blend taken from foudres. It shows wonderful cherry and blueberry fruit, ample spice and plush tannins. 90-92 Points

Burghound: Here too there isn't much to describe beyond wood toast and reductive aromas. On the plus side there is excellent density and power to the intense and energetic medium-bodied flavors that exhibit a lovely minerality on the well-balanced and youthfully austere but not really rustic finale. Very good quality here. 2022+. A Sweet Spot Wine. 89-91 Points
