Montee de Tonnerre 2016 - Chablis' top Premier Cru. Arriving next week

New vintage, same serious quality

It comes as no surprise that Montee de Tonnerre is the Premier Cru Chablis that everyone wants. Located alongside the Grand Crus it is universally acknowledged as the best of the Premier Crus producing a wine with an additional layer of complexity.

Normally we have to take Montee de Tonnerre on allocation but a chance meeting with Jean-Paul Durup at Prowein in Dusseldorf presented a fantastic opportunity to purchase a serious amount.

Jean-Paul had some samples of his 2016's for tasting. A few of the wines were bottled but most were still in tank waiting for the right time. I was extremely impressed with the 2016's I tasted at Prowein. The vintage is not unlike 2014 in that it has wonderful acidity and minerality. It is a tiny fraction fuller than 2014 but nothing like 2015 which is riper or 2013 that borders on exotic. If you loved 2014 you will feel the same about 2016. And for those who found 2014 a little acid driven, 2016 provides that tiny bit more flesh.

That said the Durup style is classic - it does not rely on oak - the wines sing of Chablis and the character imparted by their unique soil.

We have 5 cases of the Durup Chablis 1er Cru Montee de Tonnerre 2016 left. The wine arrives next week so if you wish to take advantage of our Pre Arrival discount of 15% now is the time to act. Grab a case and drink it over the next decade.

Decanter: A beautifully plush Burgundy, with a minerally, leathery perfume of wild strawberries and cream plus an exuberance of dark red fruit. Developing on the palate, with sweet and savoury notes, hints of leather and wood smoke, and enough fruit to manage the tannins. A long finish and fine future.
