"Beautiful, terrific"... Burghound
Two tremendous value Premier Crus to add to the cellar
The commune of Pernard-Vergelesses is an extension of Aloxe-Corton around the Hill of Corton. The Grand Crus here are labelled Corton or Corton-Charlemagne, the Premier Crus and Villages wines are labelled Pernard-Vergelesses. It is a particularly good source for whites as the vineyards do not have to contend with the heat of the sun which can be a problem for vineyards facing south.
Pernand-Vergelesses is a village on the rise. In recent years the quality has been recognized and new Grand Crus and Premier Crus have been added.
Domaine Dubreuil-Fontaine is located in Pernand-Vergelesses so it is no surprise that they own two of the best Premier Cru vineyards in the village.
The wines could be described as little Cortons. They have minerality and structure and the ability to age long term. In keeping with the Dubreuil-Fontaine style there is a lovely fruit intensity and a wonderful persistence on the finish.
And of course the pricing is exceptional.
We feature two wines that have been very well scored by Burghound. However, I feel the true quality of the wines is found in the tasting notes. The wines are complex, concentrated and classic prompting Burghound to use the words "beautiful" and "terrific" - not bad for a pair of Burgundies you can buy for under $60 a bottle!
Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Clos Bertet Monopole Blanc
Normal Price $65.50
Pre Arrival Price $55.50
A 1.6 ha monopole belonging to the domaine. Both Pinot and Chardonnay are grown but it the Chardonnay that really sings.
Burghound: This is ever-so-slightly riper still with elegant and pure aromas of green fruit, pear, stone and apple. There is an abundance of palate coating dry extract that imparts a silky texture to the impressive deep, balanced and long finish. This is a beautiful and harmonious effort that is absolutely worth a look. A Sweet Spot Wine. 92 Points
Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile de Vergelesses Rouge
Normal Price $69.50
Pre Arrival Price $59.00
The soil here is argilo-calcaire with a high iron oxide content providing structure and longevity. Jasper Morris says "This is my favourite vineyard within Pernand. The vineyard is perfectly situated at mid-slope and faces south-east without falling into the shadow of the Hill of Corton."
Burghound: This is notably more elegant with a bright, layered, airy and stony nose of primarily red currant scents. There is an attractive sense of refinement to the supple but concentrated medium-bodied flavors that ooze a lovely minerality on the tension-filled, deep and impressively persistent finish. This is absolutely terrific and I especially like the overall sense of harmony and balance. A classic Ile. A Sweet Spot Wine. 92 Points
