New 2011 Vintage of one of our
all-time best sellers! In Stock Now.
Winter has passed and finally the sun is back again! It is white wine time (at least during the day). Most of us are rather partial to a glass or two of Chardonnay, particularly when it comes from France. Located just south of Beaune, the Macon, which is part of Burgundy, is producing increasingly fine wines. The World Atlas of Wine by Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson says "The slightly warmer climate than that of the Cote d'Or suits the Chardonnay grape, which seems gloriously at home in the Maconnais."
The 2011 Domaine de la Verpaille Macon Vieilles Vignes is now in stock. It is every bit as good as the 2010.

When they say Vieilles Vignes (old vines) they really mean it! This remarkable wine is produced from 115 year old Chardonnay vines!
Another great Macon from Verpaille. I see a lot of similarities with the 2010.
There is a suggestion of Chablis at the start - minerals and chalk. Then the wine opens out with citric, stony character. It is fine and quite taught, obviously Chardonnay, but in a savoury French style with no oak character. The old vines add intensity but all the time retaining a freshness that finishes bright and crisp for Macon. Outperforms many Macons that cost considerably more.
No wonder Domaine de la Verpaille the New Talent Award from French Guide La Revue du Vin de France last year.
