Domaine Denis Père et Fils is a family business located in Pernand-Vergelesses, a picturesque town located in the Côte de Beaune. The property includes 13.5 hectares of vineyard holdings which encompass the terrains of Pernand-Vergelesses, Savigny-Les-Beaune, Aloxe-Corton and Chorey-Les-Beaune.

Just like his father and grandfather before him, Raoul Denis began a career as a vigneron of the prestigious Hospices de Beaune in 1940. Yet Raoul also had aspirations to work on the small 2 hectare family property and nurture it into what he believed it had the potential to be. So, together with his wife Raymonde, Raoul began fulfilling a long-time dream. By 1972, Denise and Raymonde had established Denis Père et fils with the help of their Denis Pere people eldest son Roland and his wife Annick. With a passion and dedication to their craft, and the acquisitions in the Ile des Vergelesses appellation, their vineyards grew bigger and richer. In 1982, when the Denis family acquired prominent parcels in Corton Charlemagne and Aloxe Corton as well as other new vineyards, they were soon selling over 10 hectares of various wines. Ten years later, in 1992, Raoul passed the torch to his youngest son Christophe and the tradition, and the dream, continued successfully.

I made my first visit to the Domaine two weeks ago. I am super glad I did. From Bourgogne up to their Grand Crus the 2016's were universally high class. New oak is used judiciously ensuring that the vineyards are allowed to speak. The problem is that like virtually all Burgundy producers their crop was very small and quantities available were limited.

But such was the quality I did something I don't often do. I ordered on the spot. Of the 6 cuvees they had available I purchased the remaining stocks of 4. That included the last 60 bottles of the Grand Cru white Corton-Charlemagne and red Corton Paulands.

What I haven't mentioned so far is the price. These wines are at prices not seen for years. But don't tell anyone.

As a new addition to our website I offer the wines at a 25% Pre Arrival Discount. If you don't jump on these you are crazy. A 2016 Grand Cru Red for $116.95 a bottle. What can I say?

Darren Harris: From 3 parcels in En Charlemagne. 30% new oak. Delightful, nose of citrus, crushed rock and flowers. Pervasive yet elegant. Clean, fresh and very vibrant on the palate with the oak swallowed up by the fruit. The chiseled finish is classic Corton-Charlemagne. Refined and textured. A great example.
Corton Les Paulands Grand Cru 2016

Darren Harris:  Les Paulands is an interesting vineyard. It is the only vineyard that I know of that has Grand Cru, Premier Cru and Villages appellations. It is only 1.05 hectares in size and the majority of that belongs to the Comte Senard. 2 barrels produced, 50% new oak. Lifted, floral nose of small red-black fruits. Punchy in the middle with acidity and freshness. Sleekly muscled with long, defined tannins driving the wine to its climax. Cellar for 5 years then investigate.

Jeanniard 5 bottle Pack
5 bottles including Clos de la Roche
Just $550.00
4 available
I am always on the lookout for interesting new domaines with top vineyards. Last week, in Burgundy, I purchased a little parcel of 2016's from Domaine Remi Jeanniard.

Remi Jeanniard started his own domanie after his father retired in 2003 and his vineyards was split between Remi and his brother. The domaine of just 6.1 hectares is located in Morey-St.-Denis, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, with plantings in Morey-St-Denis, Gevrey-Chambertin, and Chambolle-Musigny. He practices sustainable farming including pruning in Spring to control yields, green harvest in July and refrains from chemical fertilizers. Grapes are handpicked and fermented using onlynatural yeast. Bottling is done without filtering nor fining. SO2 is used minimally, choosing instead to preserve the wine's freshness with carbonic gasses.

Domaine Remi Jeanniard's vines are older than the average vine age in the region, with all of his Vielles Vignes village bottlings being at least 50 years old, and the Morey St Denis over 60. The wines are not powerhouses, instead they're attuned to a Zen-like quiet, slowly drawing on seasoned Burgundy characters. The aromatic profile is filled with red fruits and flowery bouquet, with the higher cuvees showing deeper, complex aromas of blue fruits, peppery spiciness and savoriness. The wines have one thing in common, the acidity. Highly refreshing, it brings out the sensation of salinity and juiciness.

I was pleased to purchase 2 cases of Remi's Morey-St-Denis Vielles Vignes 2016 and 6 bottles of his Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2016. To ensure fair distribution I have decided to split them in to 5-Bottle lots each containing 4 bottles of the Morey-St-Denis VV and 1 bottle of the Clos de la Roche Grand Cru.

The 5-Bottle pack is only $550.00 - fine value when you consider you have 1 Grand Cru as well as 4 old vine Moreys. Drink the Moreys and keep the Clos de la Roche. At $550.00 for the 5 bottles the Clos de la Roche is almost free!
Morey-St.-Denis, Vieilles Vignes: From three vineyards: 'Très Girard' (planted in 1920),"Clos Solon Très" (planted 1945), and 'Clos des Ormes' (planted 1951 and makes up 2/3 of the blend).
The Pack is not on our website. To order email tracey@grandmillesime.com.au.
