Tiny quantities, serious wines...
Excellent scores from Bill Nanson's "The Burgundy Report"
Bill Nanson's first reviews of the 2016 Burgundy have been published. He is extremely positive about the whites (refer yesterday's email for his analysis of the vintage).

We have our 2016 allocation from Domaine Morey-Coffinet. The now legendary frost of 27 April severely affected the domaine's vineyards and the volume of grapes produced varied from 10% to 40% of usual. Sadly, this means that a number of cuvees were not be produced in 2016.
We have small quantities still available at our Pre Arrival Discount of 15%.

Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2016
Normally $729.00
Pre Arrival Price $619.00

Morey-Coffinet Batard Label Bill Nanson "The Burgundy Report": From the Chassagne side, close to the only tree in the vineyard! One-third of a normal harvest here. One row of vines near the wall was fine, but the deeper into the vineyard you moved, the more frosted it became.
Freshness and a little salinity too. Hmm, fine intensity here - really a changing flavour, continuously evolving in the mouth. Some salinity and layers of flavour. Excellent wine...

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles 2016
Normally $256.50
Pre Arrival Price $217.95
18 bottles remaining

Morey-Coffinet Pucelles_label
Bill Nanson "The Burgundy Report": The nose starts wide, becomes, more floral, some salinity, slowly changing, and ever-more attractive. Hmm, really good volume in the mouth, changing, not the must focus, but there is discrete structure and always fine flavour of good intensity. Fine, elegant and beautiful, and with delicious waves of finishing flavour.
Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Romanee 2016
Normally $186.95
Pre Arrival Price $158.95
30 bottles remaining

Morey-Coffinet Romanee Label
Bill Nanson "The Burgundy Report": A faint oak spice with a vibration of reduction. Hmm, layers - and delicious layers of flavour at that. Mouth-watering gorgeous wine. Really super wine here!

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru En Cailleret 2016
Normally $186.95
Pre Arrival Price $158.95
28 bottles remaining
morey-coffiney Caillerets label
Bill Nanson "The Burgundy Report": A little higher toned, faint pepper spice. A brighter freshness, seemingly spiced, but layers of flavour, indeed sweetness of flavour. Delicious wine - perhaps I expect a little more density but this is super tasty...

Chassagne-Montrachet 2016
Normally $122.95
Pre Arrival Price $104.50
38 bottles remaining

Morey-Coffinet Chassagne Label
Bill Nanson "The Burgundy Report": This and Puligny Pucelles have been bottled.
Hmm, bright, almost spiced and saline nose with a classic herb. Wide, almost spicy Meursault style but with a different structure. Layers of fine Chassagne flavour. Delicious wine.
If you are a fan of the domaine you should not miss the 2016's.

pied du mont chauve demoiselles mood
Au Pied du Mont Chauve Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Demoiselles 2015
Just over a case left
"The tiny Puligny-Montrachet Les Demoiselles is both very rare and potentially of exceptional quality, so highly sought-after." Jasper Morris

Les Demoiselles is a 0.6 hectare white vineyard immediately to the right (north) of Montrachet. Here there are just three owners. Jasper Morris MW says "The tiny Puligny-Montrachet Les Demoiselles is both very rare and potentially of exceptional quality, so highly sought-after."

It is notably stony with a little more topsoil than Chevalier-Montrachet above. Indeed part of the vineyard owned by the powerful negociants Jadot and Latour was reclassified as Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru in the late 1930's (today, they still use the name Les Demoiselles on their labels).

The Au Pied du Mont Chauve vines were originally owned by Bernard Colin and were purchased by the Picard family (owner of Au Pied du Mont Chauve and Chateau Chassagne-Montrachet) in 2007. Their parcel is in the prime location at the south end, right alongside Montrachet.

The domaine has one custom made 350 litre barrel to hold their entire production. That's 466 bottles for the world! This really is a special vineyard, not unlike Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Dent de Chien, except even harder to find. The location, rarity and quality justifies its premium over other Premier Crus.
Darren Harris: Harvested early - 5 September. The 2015 is richer and more powerful on the nose than the 2014. The mid palate has higher glycerol and more texture. There is heaps of extract - Grand Cru weight. To be honest it doesn't remind me of any other Premier Cru - it has that pineapple character, which combined with multi layered complexity, immediately sends me 10 metres south to Montrachet. And more so than the higher acid 2014. The wine finishes long and fresh, surprisingly without oak influence (the domaine uses a specially made barrel for the vinification as the quantity produced is so small. It was not new in 2015). I was very impressed with all of the 2015 whites at this domaine but the wine that stands out, and even benefits from the character of the vintage, is Les Demoiselles.
