In the past it was not common to describe Pommard as stylish. The wines were big, meaty and tannic. However, just as has occured in Aloxe-Corton, many makers of Pommard have found their mojo and are making wines that are fine and simply more delicious.
One of these is Domaine Launay-Horiot.
This is a very exciting new domaine with some wonderful vineyard holdings. To read the interesting backgound click here.
Today we present the Pommard 1er Cru Les Chaponnieres 2015. This small vineyard (2.87 hectares) lies below Les Rugiens Bas. Jasper Morris MW says it is "an excellent site".
Burghound is a big fan of both the maker and the wine. He says "Because this is only Launay's second commercialized vintage (the '11s, '12s and '13s were all sold off), it's difficult to know whether the superb quality I found in 2015 is attributed to beginner's luck or whether he is simply a gifted winemaker. Either way, these are some of the best wines for their levels that I tasted and they're highly recommended."
This affordable Premier Cru Pommard is Burghound's equal second highest Pommard of the 2015 vintage. Only Launay-Horiots Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens-Bas scores higher with 94 Points. These wines are up there with, and typically more highly rated than, de Montille, de Courcel, Lafarge etc.
As I mentioned last week this is a domaine you should become familiar with.
We offer the wine at a 15% Pre Arrival Discount.
