The outstanding Corton of my trip
Super Grand Cru quality

Seguin-Manuel was founded in 1824 as a negociant business in Savigny-le-Beaune. In 2004 the business was purchased by Thibaut Marion who then moved the business to Beaune, into old cellars originally owned by Albert Bichot.

Thibaut set about expanding the domaine's vineyards with plots in the Cote de Nuits and Cote de Beaune.

Wednesday afternoon I visited the domaine to taste through their 2016's. There were considerably fewer cuvees to taste due to the frost but I can say what there was to try were the finest Seguin-Manuel wines I can remeber.

At the very top of the tree was a stunning Corton Rognets Grand Cru Red. This is a new cuvee for Seguin-Manuel and it was an absolute cracker. We all know that Corton has gone ahead in leaps and bounds over the last decade and this wine was simply one of the best I have tasted.

Unfortunately for Grand Cru lovers only one barrel was produced. So there are just 288 bottles for the world. Such a shame when a wine is this good!

I did however manage to procure 48 bottles, a rather decent slice for Australia. This wine is Grand Cru through and through. If you think Corton is not as good as the big names from the Cote de Nuits I suggest you try a bottle.

It is not the cheapest Corton out there but it is one of the best. Compare it to Clos de la Roche or Bonnes-Mares and the price is very fair. As a further incentive for those who act quickly I have increased the Pre Arrival Discount to 25% - but only for paid orders placed today.

As a side note: With so many modern labels on wines these days it is wonderful to see the use of original Seguin-Manuel label designs from the 1900's. They are an attractive point of difference.

Seguin-Manuel Corton Rognets 2016 Darren Harris: 45 year old vines. 100% destemmed. One cask produced. New oak to start then into an older barrel. Deep red-garnet. Glorious nose of cherry, graphite, mocha, earth and stone. The nuances trade places as the wine sits in the glass. With air we see more spice. The fresh juice that is a hallmark of 2016 is present and very appealing. The palate is beautifully formed with with a suave level of extract coating the mouth and fine grained tannins leading to long and complex finish without dryness. A great combination of new and old Corton winemaking that could not fail to impress. Easily the equal of serious Grand Crus from the Cote de Nuits in both style and quality. A simply super 2016 Grand Cru and highly recommended.
