6 of the Best! My personal choices from the first 2 weeks in Burgundy

6 of the best
Six wines I wholeheartedly recommend. Pop a few in the cellar and enjoy for years to come

My first two weeks in Burgundy have shown me just how good the 2016 vintage is. It is less ripe than 2015 and juicier and fresher than 2014. The one word the vignerons continually use is "classic".

I have tasted hundreds of wines and the selection below are six of the most outstanding and exciting bottles I have uncovered. It all goes to prove that you don't need a famous name to produce great wine. In fact, sometimes I wonder if it is the exact opposite with so many new and young winemakers coming to the fore with superb wines at reasonable prices.

Take advantage of our Pre Arrival Prices and save 15%-25%. Do remember stocks are limited as the 2016 vintage was very small.

Domaine de la Choupette Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne 2016
Normally $133.50
Special Pre Arrival Price $99.95

CHoupette Garenne label Darren Harris: From extraordinarily old vines planted in 1914! Piercing nose of citrus, pear, minerals and white flowers.  A hint of oak hidden below. Saline and seductive. Tighter and more mineral than Les Chalumaux with strong notes of grapefruit and wet stone. The palate is elegant and textured from the old vines with a delightful acid-led freshness, a trademark of the 2016 vintage. Premir Cru Puligny for under $100 is a rarity.
Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les Perrieres 2016
Landed Price $199.95
Pre Arrival Price $169.95
chauvenet Perrieres label new
Darren Harris: Chauvenet own parcels in seven Nuits Premier Crus including Les Vaucrains, Les Damodes and Les Bousselots but it is their small 0.23 hectare parcel in Les Perrieres that has me gob-smacked in 2016. The wine combines red and black fruits in a lifted, aromatic nose with minerals in spades. It is fresh and vibrant yet deeply flavoured with subtle spices playing in the background. 1/3 new oak contributes to the freshness and ensures the wine remains lifted and aromatic. This is really fine NSG Premier Cru with an elegant character yet never losing its stamp of origin. Only 3 barrels produced in 2016. Very fine quality.

Domaine Coste-Caumartin Pommard
1er Cru Clos des Boucherottes
Monopole 2016
Landed Price $171.50
Special Pre Arrival Price $128.50
Coste-Caumartin Boucherottes label
Gilbert and Gaillard: A garnet color with ruby highlights. Racy nose, floral presence with greedy Morello cherry. The palate seduces by its scale, its elegance, its fullness. One praises to the skies for its fruit, its floral dimension, its generous tannic finish. A 2016 with an entire character.
 96 Points (Huge!)

Darren Harris: Deep purple-red. Intense nose of cool black fruits - mostly cherries - and huge minerality. Refined and cool. Tight, very tight. The super low cropping adds layer upon layer on a textured palate culminating in an amazing peacock's tail and a very long stony finish. The silky tannins are extremely fine and coated by the velvety fruit. The domaine sets out to make this wine as a Grand Cru with extremely low cropping and beautiful handling. They succeed admirably. I don't think I have ever tasted a Pommard quite like this. It reminds me of a theoretical blend of Corton Clos du Roi, Clos Vougeot and Clos de la Roche with each coming to the fore as the wine sits in the glass. It is a sensual wine and is very special indeed. Forget your pre-conceived idea of Pommard. This is a super wine of Grand Cru quality. Awesome!
Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets 2016
Normal Price $117.50
Special Pre Arrival Price $87.95

Vaudoisey Caillerets Label Caillerets is beautifully exposed to the south and east, moderately sloped, and is extremely highly regarded by the locals. As the name suggests the soil is full of small stones which aid drainage and reflect heat.
Darren Harris: Still in barrel. Dark berries, a hint of kirsch, a note of dark chocolate. Cool, pure and fresh. Very complex with stony minerality and long, fine tannins. Quite lovely.

Domaine Rene Cacheux Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Suchots 2016
Landed Price $266.50
Special Pre Arrival Price $199.95

Cacheux rene Suchots Label Cacheux has two parcels of Les Suchots. One is 3 metres from Romanee-St-Vivant, the other touches Echezeaux. The vines were planted in the 1950's and 1980's.

Darren Harris: From a significant 1 hectare holding made up of two very well situated parcels right alongside the Grand Crus. Planted in the 1950's and 1980's. 100% destemmed. 50% new oak. Deep red. Slightly softer fruit character than Les Beaux Monts with cherry, kirsch and an array of soft, exotic  spices. A little more layered. Concentrated with excellent mouthfeel and ample extract. A hint of new oak and zippy acidity. Complex. Finishes long and engaging.

Bouley Bourgogne Label
Pascal Bouley Bourgogne 2014
"This is a fine effort and would make a good choice for a house red." Burghound
9 Cases Left
Burghound: (from vines located in Volnay). There is excellent density of fruit to the plum, earth and violet-scented nose. The attractively vibrant middle weight flavors possess a lush mouth feel as well as better than average complexity for a wine of this level, all wrapped in a sappy and balanced finale. This is a fine effort and would make a good choice for a house red. A Sweet Spot Wine.
