Stop Press! 96 Points from Gilbert and Gaillard. I told you it was seriously good!

What a difference a day makes! Today we have a new tasting note for Coste-Caumartin's Pommard 1er Cru Clos de Boucherottes Monopole 2016. 96 Points! If that doesn't convince you to grab some nothing will!

On a site dating back to the time of the Great Dukes of Burgundy Domaine Coste-Caumartin has a rich history. The buildings go back to 1610 and the well in the forecourt (which appears on their label) is dated 1641 - possibly the year that building was completed.

The Coste-Caumartin family "moved-in" in 1793 at the height of the French Revolution. Over the centuries the domaine has expanded to 12 hectares with its major holdings in the commune of Pommard.

The domaine's finest vineyard is their monopole Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Boucherottes. It has been in the family since 1908. The vineyard has always been a jewel of the village and 500 years ago it was part of the Royal Domain. This vineyard lies on the Beaune border and is largely surrounded by Pommard 1er Cru Les Petits Epenots to the south and Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches to the north. It is, in effect, a clos of Petits Epenots.

Both Les Epenots and Les Rugiens have applied to the INAO for elevation to Grand Cru status. You can read more here.

To introduce Domaine Coste-Caumartin and their wonderful Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Boucherottes Monopole 2016 to our portfolio we offer this wine at a 25% Pre Arrival discount. Grand quality at just $128.50. Simply super!

Coste-Caumartin Boucherottes labelGilbert and Gaillard: A garnet color with ruby highlights. Racy nose, floral presence with greedy Morello cherry. The palate seduces by its scale, its elegance, its fullness. One praises to the skies for its fruit, its floral dimension, its generous tannic finish. A 2016 with an entire character. 96 Points (Huge!)

Darren Harris:
Deep purple-red. Intense nose of cool black fruits - mostly cherries - and huge minerality. Refined and cool. Tight, very tight. The super low cropping adds layer upon layer on a textured palate culminating in an amazing peacock's tail and a very long stony finish. The silky tannins are extremely fine and coated by the velvety fruit. The domaine sets out to make this wine as a Grand Cru with extremely low cropping and beautiful handling. They succeed admirably. I don't think I have ever tasted a Pommard quite like this. It reminds me of a theoretical blend of Corton Clos du Roi, Clos Vougeot and Clos de la Roche with each coming to the fore as the wine sits in the glass. It is a sensual wine and is very special indeed. Forget your pre-conceived idea of Pommard. This is a super wine of Grand Cru quality. Awesome!

New Arrivals Dinner Noir April 2018 Header
New Arrivals Dinner at Noir
Our next dinner features 13 wines from 13 producers. Whilst most of the wines are from Burgundy we will also venture out to other regions of France with whites from the Rhone and the Loire.

You will have the opportunity to taste the recently bottled Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Perrieres 2016 from Domaine Jomain and the ageless Meursault 1993 from Domaine Ampeau. There's a contrast in vintages for you!

We have two brackets of reds including our third Selection Grand Millesime wine - a Pinot Noir from the Mornington Peninsula. I bet you didn't see that coming! And of course seven 2015 red Burgundies from the far north to the deep south.

It is going to be a lot of fun!

The wines will be accompanied by a 4-course meal at one of our favourite restaurants - Noir - in Richmond. The restaurant has One Hat in the Good Food Guide and chef Peter Roddy consistently turns out great food.

The dinner is just $165.00 which I think is terrific value.
Date: Wednesday 4 April 2018
Time: 7pm
Venue: Noir, 175 Swan Street, Richmond 3121
Cost: $165.00 per person
