Chablis lovers - don't miss this!

Greetings from Burgundy! Today was the first day of the Grands Jours de Bourgogne - a week of tastings spanning Chablis to Macon. It is a torrid schedule.

Today was Chablis' turn and I visited this charming town to see what was on offer. There were over 130 producers presenting wines for tasting. Whilst numerous vintages were represented it was 2016 that most interested me.

This vintage is in a very similar mould to the great 2014 vintage. The wines are fresh and mineral without the more exotic characters often shown in 2015. It is another classic vintage and if you were a fan of 2014 (and who wasn't) you should stock up on the 2016's.
My main interest is always Premier and Grand Cru Chablis but having been introduced to Poitout's Petit Chablis Franc de Pied L'Inextinct last Grands Jours I know not to rule anything out. And today it proved to be the case again.

Vignobles Dampt produce two Petit Chablis: Elegance which is self explanatory and Vieilles Vignes. Both are excellent but it was the Vieilles Vignes that blew me away.

Petit Chablis is not lesser Chablis. It was a appellation created in 1944 to encompass new sites outside the original borders. The vineyards are typically high on the slopes with mostly Portlandian soil with some Kimmeridgian mixed through. The grapes enjoy these higher elevations producing more elegant wines.
However, add in old vines and Petit Chablis really starts to sing. Those of you who have tasted the iconic L and C Poitout Petit Chablis Franc de Pied L'Inextinct will know what I mean.
Dampt's Vieills Vignes vineyards are located near Villy in the north of the appellation. The vine age is around 70 years and not surprisingly the cropping level is low. This shows in the wine.
The wine looks for all intents and purposes like Chablis proper - and I would say it is superior to many Premier Crus I tasted today. It is a special wine and an absolute bargain.
When you buy by the case the wine is just $29.99 a bottle. I doubt you can find a better Chardonnay anywhere at this price. Pop a case in the cellar and drink over the next five years.

Darren Harris: Classic Chablis nose with minerals and citrus (plenty of this in the 2016 vintage). The palate is intense and textured but not exotic. Quite the opposite in fact. The old vines add the mouth feel and the vintage supplies the acid drive. There is minerality in spades. Easily Chablis Villages quality but I think even better. It would have beaten many a Premier Cru in a taste-off today.

I have been hoping to find a super quality and affordable white from Burgundy with the sellout of the early Jomain Bourgogne Blanc 2016. To find it first day of tasting is a great windfall.
