The Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru vineyard of La Dent de Chien occupies a prestigious, if difficult site. It sits immediately above Le Montrachet, on some extremely rocky ground of which only part is suitable for planting. The name translates as "dog's tooth", from the white rocks that predominate.
The vineyard is small - 0.64 hectares - and because of the difficult terrain most of it lies barren, covered by rocks and scrubby bushes.
Prior to 1936 the land was considered part of Montrachet. Jasper Morris MW says of La Dent de Chien "A further slice disappeared into Montrachet a while back. Some comparisons can be made with Chevalier-Montrachet, given the siting and style of the vineyard."
There are very few makers of the wine and not surprisingly, they make very little of it. Chateau de la Maltroye own 0.20 hectares of 75 year old vines. They make 3 and sometimes 4 barrels a year. That means just 675-900 bottles for the world! Compare that to first growth Bordeaux!
