They say all good things take time. Benoit Stehly, the nephew of Georges, has been making the wines at George Lignier for some years. He has refined and developed his own style which is more about freshness, aromatics and complexity rather than extraction and heavy oak handling.

I tasted his 2016's last November and was very impressed. Benoit does not look for extraction, rather an elegance with complex aromatics. It a classic vintage like 2016 this works wonderfully well.

More protected from cold wind than Clos St-Denis. Less elegant and more powerful than his Clos St-Denis. More Morey, he says.
Shaded ruby. Sweet and sumptuous on the nose. Very rich and lively with strong fruity notes - raspberries? Taffeta texture. No monster! 'It's still mine', says winemaker Benoît Stehly. Good mineral finish. Very clean.

Vinous: Stephen Tanzer: 
(the estate owns five plots on a range of different soil, with the vines averaging about 60 years of age): Moderately saturated medium red. Aromas of cherry, strawberry and raspberry accented by brown spices; the nose suggests a bigger wine than the Clos Saint-Denis. The large-scaled and deeper in the mouth but tightly wound, with its red fruit flavors complicated by soil-driven notes of menthol, stone, dried flowers, spices and underbrush. A bit more powerful and tannic than the Clos Saint-Denis, this wine will also require a minimum of five or six years of aging upon release. 91-94 Points

Lignier Clos-St-Denis label Jancis Robinson: 
1.49 ha! 40% new oak. He recently changed oak sources. He is the biggest owner of the 6.3 ha. 45- to 70-year-old vines, always blended.
Limpid ruby. Good density with a mentholated note. Rich and powerful and layered and really rather majestic. Real beginning, middle and end. Subtle. Long and layered. Excellent balance. He says this best expresses what he wants to do. 17.5

Tim Atkin MW: The domaine's holdings of Clos St Denis are comparatively extensive at 1.49 hectares. This was showing a little reduction when I tasted it in Burgundy and again in London, so it needs time in bottle. Showing the classic freshness of the Grand Cru, it's a balanced, subtle, focused wine with loganberry and red cherry fruit and savoury tannins. 2026-34. 94 Points

Lignier Bonnes-Mares Label Jancis Robinson: 
Planted 1926. On top of a small quarry. Limestone and a more feminine style of Bonnes Mares. 0.29 ha. Very small yield. 'I used an old plastic tank. Quite cold maceration at first. Cool, long fermentation', says winemaker Benoît Stehly.
Glowing red/ruby. Very floral - roses? Very different from most Bonnes Mares. Light and lifted. In 2016 with a salty end. Marked acidity and relatively light bodied. So unusual. Dry finish.

Tim Atkin MW: Despite the fact that his domaine is based in Morey-St-Denis, Benoit Stehly's 0.22 hectares are on the Chambolle side of the Grand Cru on red soils. This is the most impressive of his three Grand Cru bottlings in 2016. It's another wine that needs time, showing some reduction and firmish tannins, but the underlying fruit is sweet and well balanced. 2026-36. 95 Points

Vinous: Stephen Tanzer: 
(these vines on red soil in Chambolle-Musigny date back to 1926, with an average age of at least 70 years, according to Stehly; three barrels made, vs. a normal five): Bright medium red. Rather backward aromas of raspberry, menthol and spices convey a cool, lightly medicinal aspect. Densely packed and fresh, with a captivating sweetness perfectly countered by a salty element. The raspberry fruit is perfumed by dried rose petal and spicy soil tones. Finishes with terrific subtle floral length and lift. Stehly had previously harvested these vines late because he thought the fruit needed to be very mature, but he picked early in 2016 owing to the frost and liked the results so much that he may pick earlier in the future. Due to the small crop, Stehly vinified this wine in a small plastic tank and was unable to increase the fermentation temperature above 26 degrees C. (he prefers 30); this no doubt partly accounts for the wine's cooler perfume. 92-94 Points

The Rare Hubert Lignier - Domaine des Chezeaux - Experimental Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru 2014

Domaine des Chezeaux are the largest owners of the Grand Cru Griotte-Chambertin. As you know their parcel is farmed en metayage by Ponsot with one third of the wine returned to Chezeaux and released under their own label.
 
However, in 2014, a small quantity of grapes were taken from Griotte-Chambertin and supplied to Domaine Hubert Lignier to vinify. Perhaps Chezeaux had an inkling of what was to occur at Domaine Ponsot or with such a big holding they were looking for interesting/better/alternative options.
 
Just one barrel was produced by Hubert Lignier. As the importer of Domaine des Chezeaux we have been granted 6 bottles of this experimental Griotte-Chambertin from 2014. I was going to keep them all but have decided I will keep 2 bottles and make 4 available to clients.
 
The wine is not inexpensive but it is very rare. I am told from vintage 2015 the wine will be commercialized and I will have a better allocation. However, for the moment the 2014 is a first-off experimental wine and something that almost never occurs in Burgundy.
