Great Value 2010 Reds from Volnay and Whites from Meursault
Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur is a Volnay specialist. This domaine was founded in 1860. The arrival of the latest generation in the form of Vincent Bitouzet, has seen the domaine adopt a new attitude to vineyard management resulting in a rapid rise in quality of the wines produced. The domaine is moving towards organic agriculture.
In terms of style, the domaine's wines, which come from a range of the best sites in Volnay, express finesse and elegance (as you expect from the commune).
Vintage 2010 offers a different style of wine to 2009. The vintage is beautifully ripe but is balanced by lovely acidity. The wines are very transparent and fresh and will drink well young but also cellar exceptionally well. Those of you partial to very old Burgundy will know just how well Volnay can age.
The union of the Bitouzet and Prieur families brought a range of Meursault vineyards into the family fold. The range includes the 1er Crus Perrieres and Charmes as well as Santenots (which is actually in Volnay) and some fine lieu-dits.
Remington Norman features Bitouzet-Prieur in his standard reference The Great Domaines of Burgundy.
Bitouzet-Prieur's 2010 production, like all domaines, was well down from 2009. When you combine low yields with appealing prices it is no wonder these wines are very popular.
