Fougeray Beauclair 2015 Header
A not to be missed wine for lovers of Grand Cru Red Burgundy

"Most famous for their Bonnes-Mares and their 'Clos Marion', the family business of Domaine Fougeray de Beauclair was founded about 1979 when Jean-Louis Fougeray, the father of the current owners, a man who by day worked in administration and by night tending his vines, made his very first cuvée. It was from a quarter hectare of Marsannay vines - in the family since 1972 - this was the start for Domaine Fougeray."

"That Marsannay cuvée was only 500 bottles and Jean-Louis took them all to Paris to sell. Laurence Olliver (née Fougeray) says that her father was 'born to work in the vineyard, it was his passion'. If Jean-Louis took the first steps to commercialisation, it was his father (the grandfather of Laurence and her sister Evelyne) that sowed the seeds for the size of the current operation (18 hectares); he had worked with the Clair family of the renowned Clair-Daü estate and there was a strong bond of friendship. That bond continued into the next generation with Bernard Clair and Jean-Louis Fougeray."

"For family reasons that are best left in the Clair family, in 1986 Bernard Clair was retiring and decided that he would lease some vines to his friend Jean-Louis Fougeray who was by then already exploiting 11 hectares, rather than as expected pass them to the next generation of the Clairs. Those were not just any old vines, they included a special parcel of Bonnes-Mares, some Chambolle- Fougeray people Musigny and more Marsannay. In so doing, they grounded the re-named Domaine Fougeray de Beauclair - 'Beauclair' coming from a blend of Jean-Louis' wife's name and Clair."

"Day to day responsibility for the domaine now rests with Jean-Louis' daughter Laurence and her husband Patrice Olliver." -BurgundyReport.com

Fopugeray Beauclair Bonnes-Mares Label Darren Harris:
There is only one maker of Bonnes-Mares from the Morey side and that is Domaine Fougeray de Beauclair. They farm 1.20 hectares of the old Clair-Dau vineyard and bottle the wine without any Chambolle fruit. (The other 0.32 hectares is blended with Chambolle grapes in Bruno Clair's Bonnes-Mares). Needless to say that makes for an interesting and rare wine that few serious drinkers have had the pleasure to taste.

A powerful nose of dark fruits - blackberry, blackcurrant, cherries, violets, fresh oak. Gentle spice and a hint of marzipan. Great extract on the palate. It is structured, masculine and long. Indeed powerful, with a impressive tannin driven finish. Like all Bonnes-Mares this wine cries out for some time in the cellar. Seriously good! And did I mention rare?

Burghound:
A moderately oaked nose offers up notes of plum, cassis and spice that are nuanced by ample earth and sauvage hints. There is outstanding volume to the muscular and naturally sweet, full-bodied and impressively concentrated flavors that brim with dry extract that imparts a velvety mouth and buffers the firm tannic spine shaping the youthfully austere finish. This built-to-age effort will definitely require patience. 91-94 Points

Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrees 2015
Normally $153.50
Special Pre Arrival Price $114.95 (Save 25%)

Fougeray Beauclair Gevrey label Darren Harris: Les Seuvrees is below Mazoyeres-Chambertin on the Morey border. From a 0.27 hectare parcel of 70+ year old vines. An unmistakable Gevrey nose: black fruits, earth, iron and hummus. Intense and powerful, quite masculine. Good weight on the palate culminating in a firm but fine tannic finish. Not far off Premier Cru quality.

Burghound: An overtly sauvage character suffuses the dark currant, earth and forest floor-scented nose. There is once again excellent tension to the muscular, rich and subtly stony middle weight flavors that culminate in a rustic, serious and decidedly firm but balanced finish. This is very Gevrey and should age well. A Sweet Spot Wine. 89-91 Points

1500ml MAGNUM Normally $315.00

fougeray beauclair vosne label Darren Harris: A 0.25 hectare parcel of 55 year old vines adjoining Les Malconsorts on the Nuits-St-Georges border. Most producers use the spelling "Damaudes", however, Fougerey de Beauclair choose the Nuits spelling "Damodes". A cool nose of black-red fruits - raspberry, blackberry with spice, violets and little smoke. Very aromatic. Round and concentrated on the mid palate with many layers. Autosuggestion or not, there is a mini-Malconsorts thing happening here. The wine finishes with minerals and serious, defined tannins. A real winner.

Chambolle-Musigny Les Veiroilles 2015
Normally $150.50
Special Pre Arrival Price $112.95 (Save 25%)
19 bottles left

Fougeray Beauclair Chambolle label Darren Harris: From a very small parcel of 0.082 hectares immediately above Bonnes-Mares. Softer and more restrained on the nose than the Gevrey. The fruit is more red and there are some dusty spice and floral notes. 30% new oak which needs to integrate a little more. The ingredients are there but this just needs a little more time to come together.

Fixin Clos Marion Monopole 2015
Normally $114.95
Special Pre Arrival Price $85.95 (Save 25%)

Fougeray marion nv label Darren Harris:
A monopole of the domaine. Quite large at 3.16 hectares. Planted in 1946. A wild nose of blue-black fruit, spice, mineral. Floral - rose petals. Crunchy, juicy fruit and more complex than the Marsannay. A wonderful juxtaposition of fresh fruit and savoury elements. A serious wine with concentration from the old vines and a lively personality from the soil.
Burghound:
Once again firm reduction renders the nose impossible to fairly evaluate. Otherwise there is terrific intensity to the tightly coiled and stony medium-bodied flavors that possess plenty of punch on the saline, balanced and focused finish. This ever-so-mildly rustic effort is a first-rate Fixin villages and highly recommended. A Sweet Spot Wine. 90-92 Points
Marsannay Les Saint-Jacques 2015
Normally $105.50
Special Pre Arrival Price $78.95 (Save 25%)
1500ml MAGNUM Normally $275.00
Special Pre Arrival Price $239.00
30 bottles and 2 Magnums left

Fougeray Beauclair st-Jacques label Darren Harris: A savoury nose of blue-red fruits, nutmeg, fennel and dusty spice with notes of honeysuckle. Sanguine, beautifully ripe with structure and considerable length framed by fine but present tannins. Terrific quality from a commune that is (sadly) not on the radar of many Burgundy lovers.

Burghound:
Reduction pushes the underlying fruit to the background. The equally mineral-driven medium weight flavors possess a slightly finer mouth feel with a lovely sense of energy that adds to the appeal of the complex and highly refreshing finish. This too is a very fine Marsannay that is worthy of your interest. 89-92 Points

Gauby PAck
3 Exceptional Wines from Domaine Gauby
Domaine Gauby is located 30 km southwest of Perpignan just outside the town of Calce. This area of France, on the border of Spain, is Roussillon.

It is a beautiful and rugged part of the world. It is still very unspoiled, wild, rocky and dry. There are a lot of rugged hills with soils composed of limestone, marl and shale - ideal for cultivation of grapes.

The Gauby family established their domaine in 1983. There are around 45 hectares of vines scattered in parcels over the hillsides around the village. Gerard Gauby has worked hard to enlarge the estate from the 5 hectares purchased by his grandfather and today the vines include some 120 year old Carignan as well as very old Mouvedre, Grenache and Syrah.

The domaine is biodynamic and produce their own vegetal preparations to apply to the vines. Weeds are grown between rows to compete with the vines forcing the roots down deeper in the rich and complex soils. The combination of old vines and the vineyard practices means extremely low yields of around 20 hl/ha.

Gerard Gauby is now firmly established as one of the superstars of the south-west. He believes that the superb quality of his wines is determined more by the character and quality of the grapes that are harvested rather than what happens in the chais. "One of our greatest advantages in the complexity of our local soils". The best wines come from schist as the vines must go deep to find nourishment. it also keeps the acidity high. "I don't like sur-maturite. I'm looking for fresh fruit. Burgundy is my reference. I want the same purity in my wines" say Gerard. These are fine, complex and thought-provoking wines.

Gauby Muntada label

We have between 3 and 4 bottles of Muntada 2011 and 2012 and La Jasse 2011 available. All have received exceptional scores from the critics.
