History in the bottle!

Clos Napoleon is a 1.83 hectare vineyard in Fixin. Originally know as Aux Cheuzots, it was purchased by Claude Noisot, an Officer of the Imperial Guard, and rechristened Clos Napoleon in honour of the emperor. Noisot fought alongside Napoleon, went into exile on Elba with him, returned for the Hundred Days and Waterloo, before retiring to Fixin where devoted the rest of his days to honouring the memory of his Emperor. Noisot commissioned Francois Rude to create a sculpture of Boneparte "Le Réveil de Napoléon" (The Awakening of Napoleon) which can be seen in the Parc Napoleon and graces the label of this wine.

After Noisot's death the vineyard lay abondoned. In 1950 the Gelins purchased the land, cleared it, and replanted the vines. The Clos Napoleon is Premier Cru and is a monopole of Domaine Pierre Gelin.

Today the vines are over 60 years old (nothing has been replanted) and produce small bunches of flavourful grapes. It is the flagship of the domaine who also own vines in Chambertin Clos de Beze. Jasper Morris says "The vineyard makes a well-structured, firm wine in the hands of sole owner Domaine Gelin."
The 2014 is the latest release as the domaine has a policy of releasing wines in the fourth year after vintage - a noble gesture in today's fast paced world.
To introduce the wines to Australia we have increased our Pre Arrival Discount from 15% to 25%.

Gelein Napoleon mood BurghoundAn intensely floral nose displays plenty of exotic tea and spice influences on the earthy red and dark currant scents. The sleek, pure and admirably elegant middle weight flavors also exhibit ample minerality on the vibrant, balanced and beautifully persistent finish that is also shaped by fine-grained tannins. A Sweet Spot Wine.

Burgundia OEnologie - Laurent Michelet:
Harvested on September 22nd, grapes in perfect health, vatted for 18 days with pigeage twice a day. Aged for 22 months in oak barrels. A bright carmine-red colour.  The nose is discreet, even austere at first. It combines spicy (Szechuan pepper), minty and slightly sauvage aromas. This bouquet is also accompanied by bramble and tobacco notes.  In the mouth, the attack is mineral, almost "stony". The tasting continues this register, showing a steady minerality. The body is bound in the tannins. The beautiful acerbity of the terroir has produced a wine of character, sturdy and dense with fine length. A "noble herbal note", from vinification with a portion of the harvest complete, lingers as an undertaste throughout the tasting. In conclusion, a finish of outstanding length with notes of tobacco, soft spices and truffles.
