Domaine Pierre Gelin is the leading wine producer in the small village of Fixin (pronounced "Fees-an"). The family domaine was founded in 1925 by Pierre Gelin and is today in the hands of Pierre's grandson, Pierre-Emmanuel. Pierre-Emmanuel farms organically and works to minimize the impact on the environment in both vineyard and cellar.

The family owns 32 acres in total including parcels in five Fixin Premier Crus and the monopole of Clos Napoléon. In 1961 Pierre also purchased vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin including the monopole Clos de Meixvelle, Clos Prieur 1er Cru, and the Grand Cru Chambertin Clos de Bèze.
The domaine's Chambertin Clos de Beze holdings are only 0.6 hectares from which they produce 1800 bottles in a bounteous year. But as we know prior to 2017 the last "full" vintage was 2009. Their style is one of elegance rather than heavy-handedness and this is appreciated by both the English and French speaking critics. Their Clos de Beze is a wine of spice, nuance, style and class as you will see in the notes below.

Chambertin-Clos de Bèze is said to have been named in 630 CE after it became the property of the Abbey of Bèze. It is, in effect, an extension of Chambertin. Clos de Bèze may be sold as Chambertin but wine from Chambertin proper may not be sold as Clos de Bèze. The differences between the two vineyards is subtle. Clos de Bèze is exposed a bit more to the east and receives slightly more sun and ripens slightly earlier. Both Grand Crus drain well and sit on a bed of limestone.
The domaine has a policy of only releasing their top wines 4 years after the year of the vintage. This ensures what is in the bottle has settled and shows at its best. The latest release is 2014.
To introduce the wines to Australia Domaine Gelin has made available three vintages of their very highly rated Chambertin Clos de Beze. We're doing our part too by increasing the Pre Arrival Discount from 15% to 25%.
Whilst Chambertin Clos de Beze is never cheap these highly rated wines are very well priced and should find a place in all serious cellars.

Burghound: 
A slightly more elegant combination features notes of wood, spice, red currant, plum and lavender scents. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the detailed and lightly mineral-inflected flavors that deliver fine depth and length on the balanced finale. This is very Gelin in style which is to say that it's not especially dense or structured yet it is harmonious and classy. This too could be approached after only 5 to 7 years if that's your preference.

Wine Spectator: 
Bright, macerated cherry is the unifying theme of this juicy, elegant red, along with floral, spice and underbrush flavors. Builds to a long, muscular finish, where the tannins hold court. Spice details linger. Best from 2021 through 2036. 94 Points

Bettane and Dessauve: Very nice juice displaying spicy, racy, full, fruit and a subtle finish.
 
A classy approach to Clos-de-Bèze in a more elegant, finer style. 19/20
Laurent Michelet - Burgundia Œnologie:
Harvested on September 18th, grapes in perfect health, vatted for 19 days with pigeage twice a day. Aged for 22 months in oak barrels. (50% of new barrels). Intense garnet red colour. 
The nose is powerful, racy, dominated by woody notes today. The undertaste of spicy notes (vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg) and wild flowers (brambles) is still discreet. A hint of mild tobacco rounds out this superb bouquet. The mouth shows the same power. Its explosive and racy attack evolves into a crescendo and a definite rise in power. The mineral texture adds a solid underpinning to this feisty wine. This great wine of the terroir (the oldest identified in Burgundy) is currently bound in the oak tannins, and is likely to stay that way for a while. Its own tannins respond to this domination with a sapidity that is almost saline.The wine mellows in the finish, giving a glimpse of its future potential when it matures. Good flavoursome length with simultaneous masculine (musk) and fruity (cherries in kirsch or eau-de-vie) impressions.

Gelin Beze Label Burghound: 
This is also a wine of contrasts as the well-layered nose combines brooding and somber fruit aromas with exuberantly spicy and floral elements. There is good punch to the attractively rich and moderately concentrated flavors that exude a subtle bead of minerality on the naturally sweet and well-balanced finale. This is very much crafted in the classic Gelin style with its emphasis on finesse and refinement which is in no small part due to the fine-grained tannins. 92 Points

Wine Spectator: 
This is laced with violet, black currant and blackberry flavors, accented by earth and tobacco notes. The tannins are firm, intensified by the vibrant acidity. Shows a streak of purity and pedigree that makes this complex, long and appealing. Best from 2020 through 2035. 94 Points

Laurent Michelet - Burgundia Œnologie: 
Harvested on October 9th, grapes in perfect health, vatted for 19 days with pigeage twice a day. 
Aged for 22 months in oak barrels (50% of new barrels). 
A beautiful bright ruby-red colour. 
The nose is both discreet and precise: notes of sweet fruits (candied oranges) and fresh red fruit (raspberries, red currents). 
Somewhat tight from ageing in 50% new barrels, it will need a few years to mellow fully.
 
The mouth is beautifully textured - juicy and racy with a surprising lushness for this wine. Its fruity character is typical of the appellation: Morello cherries and pomegranate seeds. The density, richness and length are already exceptional.

Gelin Beze LabelBurghound: This is easily the most complex wine in the range with its exuberantly spicy nose that exhibits notes of Asian tea, red and black currant, earth, floral hints and a hint of sandalwood. There is good power to the notably finer larger-bodied flavors that display much more minerality on the impressively long and intense finale. As fans of the domaine know, the Gelin Bèze is never an especially big or powerful example of the appellation but it is balanced, harmonious and always seems to age extremely well. To this end the 2012 version should do the same.

The aromas are reticent here, but this delivers on the palate, with intense flavors of rose, strawberry, cherry, licorice, spice and mineral. Complex and elegant, with superb definition and a lingering aftertaste. Best from 2019 through 2035. 95 Points
