Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe Chateaneuf-du-Pape La Crau 2015

A Chateauneuf Classic...
Domaine Vieux Telegraphe derives its name from a 1792 telegraph station that once stood on the hill where the domaine now stands. The history of the domaine begins in 1898 when Hippolyte Brunier planted vines on the plateau of La Crau on the eastern side of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. By 1900 Vieux Telegraphe was bottling it own wine.

Today the estate comprises 60.5 ha of vineyards which, quite unusually, are a single parcel, all in the lieu-dit of La Crau. Here the ground is covered with medium to large stones.

Vieux Telegraphe is made from a blend of approximtaly 65% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Mourvedre and 5% Cinsault with bits and pieces of other varieties mixed in. It is a traditional Chateauneuf-du-Pape in the very best sense.

We offer the new 2015 red in bottle and magnum and the 2016 white. Please note the Magnums are very limited.

Wine Spectator:
This has a lovely, perfumy mix of savory, mint, tobacco, blood orange, cherry and bergamot notes all mixed together, carried by silky but ample structure before ending with a long, mineral- and shiso leaf-infused finish. Finely beaded acidity lets everything hang wonderfully. This should expand and cruise in the cellar. Best from 2020 through 2035.

Vinous Media:
Brilliant ruby-red. A fragrant nose evokes ripe red and dark berries, musky flowers, licorice and white pepper, and a smoky mineral overtone adds vivacity. Juicy and concentrated in the mouth, offering gently sweet cherry, cassis and floral pastille flavors that spread out steadily on the back half. Closes chewy, sweet and very long, with building tannins adding shape and grip. I really like the blend of structure and fruit here92-94 Points

Vieux Telegraph Blanc label Wine Spectator: Ripe and rich, but focused, with verbena, bitter almond and wet stone notes threading through the core of creamed yellow apple, pear and melon flavors. Very long, with a gorgeous salted butter echo. Drink now through 2020. 95 Points

This is a stunning white and for those who only drink Burgundy it is seriously worth a look.
Wine Spectator:
This is dreamy, with creamed melon, pear and green fig flavours gliding along, framed by light brioche and meringue notes. The long finish lets the fruit hang beautifully. Offers refined opulence. Drink now through 2022. 95 Points
Darren Harris:
Stunning nose! Is this Burgundy? Fresh stonefruit and a lick of complexing sulphides. A blend of Roussane, White Grenache and Clairette part matured in barrel, part with malo. I don't recall ever tasting a white Chateauneuf of this style. Refined flavours of stonefruits and minerals. Crisp and fresh. Mouthfilling. Never heavy. There are elements of Premier Cru Chassagne-Montrachet. The 2016 vintage is being highly praised by the winemakers and this is a stunning example of what the new generation can achieve. I am in awe. Bravo Florent!
