A lovely selection of vineyards from Gevrey-Chambertin and nearby from the highly rated 2016 vintage

Philippe Drouhin's grandparents were wise. Despite hard times in the wine business they made sure to invest in prime land on the Côte de Nuits. Thanks to them, 42 per cent of today's Domaine Drouhin-Laroze is grand cru vineyards, from Chambertin Clos de Bèze to Clos de Vougeot.

The beginnings of Domaine Drouhin-Laroze date back to 1850 when Jean-Baptiste Laroze purchased the first vines in Gevrey-Chambertin. In 1919 Suzanne, his granddaughter married Alexandre Drouhin who owned vines in Chambolle-Musigny and the Domaine Drouhin-Laroze was created.
Drouhin-Laroze family
Today, the sixth generation is in charge of 11.5 hectares of vines spread across some prestigious sites in the Cote de Nuits including the Grand Crus Chambertin Clos de Beze, Bonnes-Mares, Clos Vougeot, Latriceres-Chambertin and Chapelle-Chambertin. There are also some very handy Premier Crus from Gevrey-Chambertin.
We have received our allocation of the classic 2016 vintage. Not only does the estate own some great vineyards but their wines are also very well priced in today's hot Burgundy market. The Grand Crus are priced between $286.50 and $385.00 Pre Arrival per bottle. Premier Crus are half that!
All wines are available at our 15% Pre Arrival Discount.

Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru 2016
Normally $453.50
Pre Arrival $385.50

Drouhin-Laroze Beze Label
Burghound: (from a parcel of 1.5 ha of vines planted in 1949). Reduction and wood dominate the wood today. Otherwise the palate impression confirms that there is plenty of volume to the rich and very concentrated large-bodied flavors where the supporting tannins are buried beneath an impressive reserve of dry extract that carries over to the mineralinflected, long, linear and powerful finish. This is clearly built-to-age and will need at least some cellar time first. 92-95 Points

Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2016
Normally $405.00
Pre Arrival $345.00
Drouhin-Laroze Bonnes-Mares label Burghound:
(from a 1.5 ha parcel that is almost entirely in the terres rouges section). A beautifully layered nose offers up notes of liqueur-like plum, warm earth and a lovely array of spice and floral elements. The exceptionally rich and generously proportioned flavors are unusually seductive in the context of what is typical for the appellation, all wrapped in a velvety, sappy and palate coating finish where a hint of wood appears. This too should drink well young.
 92-94 Points

Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2016
Normally $385.00
Pre Arrival $327.50

Drouhin-Laroze Vougeot Label Burghound:
(from a superbly situated 1 ha parcel high on the hill). An overtly floral nose enjoys added breadth in the form of earthy black cherry and currant aromas that are trimmed in just enough wood to notice. Like the Bonnes Mares and Chapelle, the medium weight plus flavors are seductive while displaying excellent intensity on the driving finish that flashes the hallmark austerity of a young Clos de Vougeot. This promising effort will require at least some restraint.
92-94 Points
Latricieres-Chambertin Grand Cru 2016
Normally $337.95
Pre Arrival $286.95

Drouhin-Laroze Latricieres Burghound:

(from a .67 ha parcel of extremely old vines). A background application of wood surrounds the cool and airy aromas of dark cherry, plum, earth and a whisper of the sauvage. There is terrific intensity to the beautifully delineated mineral-driven flavors that possess a refined mouthfeel before culminating in a saline, highly persistent and linear finish. As is usually the case with this wine, it will need at least a few years of cellaring to unwind and flesh out.
91-94 Points

Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru 2016
Normally $337.95
Pre Arrival $286.95

Drouhin-Laroze Chapelle Label Burghound:
(from a .52 ha parcel in En La Chapelle). Noticeable if mild reduction detracts mildly from the otherwise ripe and earthy red berry fruit aromas. The rich, concentrated and seductively textured flavors possess an ample amount of extract that buffers the very firm tannic spine and confers a relatively refined mouthfeel on the velvety, balanced and patently persistent finish. This succulent effort should also drink reasonably well young if desired.

91-93 Points

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaut-St-Jacques 2016
Normally $199.95
Pre Arrival $169.95

Drouhin-Laroze Lavaux Label Burghound:
(from a .3 ha parcel of vines planted in 1943). An overtly sauvage and intensely earthy nose features mostly dark currant aromas that are trimmed in discreet but not invisible wood. The cool and moderately austere medium weight flavors possess fine depth and reasonably good mid-palate concentration while terminating in an agreeably dry, dusty and mildly austere finish. This is a classically styled Lavaut. 90-93 Points

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Prieur 2016
Normally $188.50
Pre Arrival $159.95

Drouhin-Laroze Clos Prieur Label
Burghound: Enough wood to warrant mentioning can be found on the pretty nose that combines notes of both red and dark cherry with those of plum and warm earth. There is impressive richness to the attractively textured and lightly mineral-inflected flavors that possess an appealing inner mouth perfume along with fine length on the spicy finish. This should be reasonably approachable in its youth.
90-92 Points
Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Craipillot 2016
Normally $188.50
Pre Arrival $159.95

Drouhin-Laroze Craipillot Label Burghound: Here the equally fresh nose is compositionally similar to that of the straight Gevrey if a bit more elegant. The medium-bodied flavors possess a polished mouthfeel and reasonably good concentration while exhibiting good persistence and depth. While this should repay mid-term cellaring, it should also drink well after only a few years of cellar time. 89-92 Points
Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Closeau 2016
Normally $177.50
Pre Arrival $150.50

Drouhin-Laroze Closeau label Burghound: (Drouhin is the only producer of this vineyard and owns 90% of it; from 60+ year old vines). Reduction dominates the nose today and while there is a lovely mouthfeel to the vibrant, sleek and focused flavors, the reduction reappears on the palate. It's hard to say if this will clean up or not. 88-91 Points

Gevrey-Chambertin 2016
Normally $127.95
Pre Arrival $108.95

Drouhin-Laroze Gevrey-Chambertin label Burghound: The notably ripe yet super-fresh nose is composed by notes of plum liqueur, black cherry and ample amounts of pungent earth. There is excellent minerality to the sleek, intense and delineated medium weight flavors that possess much better overall complexity on the dusty, serious and balanced finish that is youthfully austere. 89-91 Points
