Bourgogne Chardonnay is an unusual beast. In the last few days I have tasted bottlings from Marsannay in the north to Mercurey in the south and numerous in between. None come within a bull's roar of Domaine Jomain's. Why? Location. Jomain's Bourgone comes from vineyards in Puligny-Montrachet. There can be no better place to produce Chardonnay.
The Jomains have several parcels blended to produce this bottling. The wine is made 1/2 in barrel, 1/2 in cask. 20% new oak is used.
Bright nose of lemon and other citrus, spice, minerals and a little toasty oak. Very Puligny-Montrachet with cold white stones. It is bright and fresh. Lively and persistent on the palate.
I raved about the 2015 (which was sold out by the time I "discovered" the domaine) but I think the 2016, with its cooler vintage conditions is even better. This is a super bottle of White Burgundy and I believe it is superior to many Premier Crus. I was fortunate to secure a good allocation which is already half gone. Stunning quality for the price.
