The new vintage from a
high-quality producer in
Chambolle-Musigny

By now I assume many of you will have had the opportunity to taste the wines of Roblot-Marchand shipped earlier this year. They are high quality Burgundies from serious vineyards and are very well priced in today's strong Burgundy market.

A week or so back we received details of our 2016 allocation from Domaine Roblot-Marchand.

You have probably read that the 2016 vintage was severely hit by frost. During my visit to Burgundy last month it was very apparent what affect that had on production. Cellar after cellar looked almost empty with quantities often less than 30% of usual. In fact in some cases the frost completely decimated the vineyard so there was zero production.

Roblot Bourgogne label Chambolle-Musigny was badly hit so it was with great pleasure that I read that my 2016 allocation from Roblot-Marchand was quite reasonable. The Premier Crus from Chambolle-Musigny are quite limited and I only have 25 cases of their lovely Bourgogne (from Chambolle-Musigny fruit). Chambolle-Musigny Pas de Chat was not produced at all. Other wines are ok including the Vosne-Romanee 1er cru Les Rouges du Dessus. This year I have a few cases of Echezeaux Grand Cru which is available to everyone with some conditions (see below).

Roblot-marchand Fuees label I did visit the domaine in October but the timing was not great. There was much activity in the winery with the 2017's and most of the 2016's had just been racked. There was not a lot available for tasting and I was offered just four 2016 cuvees. The Chambolle-Musigny Villages was aromatic and lively - very classic Chambolle. The Vosne-Romanee Villages was perfumed and spicy. Not particularly dark but very attractive. Roblot-Marchand Vosne Rouges NV label Gevrey-Chambertin La Croix des Champs was a lot deeper with serious intensity. An excellent Gevrey. Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Rouges du Dessus was the top wine. More weight and spice, darker with more character. A must for the cellar.

We have 11 wines available 2016. We are too early for reviews but I suggest you read the vintage report from winehog.org at right. His impressions are very similar to mine. It is going to be lovely vintage for Burgundy connoisseurs.

Roblot-Marchand Echezeaux NV label IMPORTANT! Echezeaux 2016. We don't have much of this so it is only available based on your purchases of Premier Cru wines. For every 8 bottles of Premier Cru (mix and match as you please) purchased you may buy 1 bottle of Echezeaux. Limit 3 per person.
If you love Chambolle-Musigny and Vosne-Romanee this is a domaine not to be missed. The wines are great value for money.

Winehog.org on the 2016's

The first two days of tasting have confirmed the very fine quality of the 2016 vintage.

It is prefered to the 2015s by quite many producers due to the cool and more classic style of the 2016 vintage - and I certainly can understand why - to some degree at least.

I have now completed the first full version of the vintage report for the 2016 red Burgundies - after tastings in March, June and October 2017. The 2016 reds are in many cases truly lovely and in some cases even genuinely magnificent. It's however also a both complex and intriguing vintage, as both style and quality show quite some variation.

The 2016 vintage is complex in many ways - the growing season was both hard and troublesome, and this also translates into some both complex wines and a rather challenging evaluation of the vintage.

For the reds there are several different styles of 2016s as the wines significantly affected by the frost often offer a different and more intense style. Furthermore wines that include fruit from the secondary generation or grapes also can offer different aromatic facets of the vintage, than the wines based only on first generation grapes.

So this is indeed a complex vintage on all levels ... but this is Burgundy and a lot of complexity is mostly good; Don't you think?!

The very low temperatures on the night between April 26th and April 27th devastated many vineyards and with that the hopes of many vignerons.

Presumably the worst frost since the 1981 vintage and the frost was atypical as vineyards like Musigny and Montrachet + other great vineyards were very badly hit. Under normal circumstances the worst affected vineyards would be the ones at the bottom of the slope - near the D974 - when a very severe frost hits Burgundy. In the end the frost resulted in damage - if not randomly - then almost all over Burgundy, and lowered the yields significantly in many plots and vineyards - from small losses to almost total destruction in the worst cases.

The basic style of the 2016 vintage

In my view the 2016s are very well balanced and offer a fine concentration. They are cooler than the 2015s and offer a fine transparency and a lovely juicy and fresh fruit. In most wines the fruit is lighter in color than the 2015s and offer a fine floral energy. The acidity is very fine giving a lovely fresh and vibrant tension.

They are classic styled wines with a lovely balance and a fine intensity - although lighter than the 2015s in most cases.

2016s! - Better than the 2015s

Most winemakers prefer the more classic style of the 2016s to the rich and generous 2015s. This tendency is pretty clear - whereas the statements about the quality level are a bit more vague.

Some think the 2015s are better quality wise, but the 2016 style is preferred - whereas others prefer both style and the quality of the 2016s.
