The return of one of Chateauneuf's top names...

The story of Domaine Giraud began in 1974 when Pierre and Mireille Giraud took on 4 hectares of Vines as tenant farmers. Pierre, a descendant of the Armenier family, is the son of a long line of winegrowers going back more than six centuries. Mireille's family owned the village distillery for many generations.

Little by little they purchased pieces of rented land and in 1981 Pierre turned the distillery into a cellar. In that same year the first of the domaine's wines were produced. In 1987 the Armenier family vineyards were divided among the family members. Pierre and Mireille inherited 8 hectares including some 100 year old vines. In 1998 the first estate bottled wine was sold and the Giraud children Marie and Francois began their involvement in the domaine.

The family vineyards currently cover 19 hectares and are well spread over the appellation. They have century old Grenache vines in the lieux-dits of La Crau, Terres Blanches, Les Gallimardes and Pignan (next to Rayas).

They make three red Chateauneuf-du-Papes. Cuvee Tradition is a blend of Grenache (60%), Syrah (35%) and Mourvedre (5%). Their two prestige cuvees Les Gallimardes and Grenaches des Pierre are only produced in exceptional years. Les Gallimardes is a belnd of 100 Years old Grenache (90%) and Syrah (10%) with a tiny amount of white grape. Grenaches de Pierre comes from the sandy soil of La Crau around Pignan. It is 100% Grenache from 100+ year old vines.

Domaine Giraud were the first Chateauneuf-du-Pape producer we imported. In the early days we were not able to get the quantities of the prestige cuvees we wanted. However, only last week the domaine contacted us again and asked if we would be interested in their 2015's. Rhone lovers will know that 2015 is a great vintage and when the domaine said we could buy decent quantities of their prestige cuvees we had no hesitation is saying yes.

Jeb Dunnuck of the Wine Advocate says "Under the inspired leadership of Marie Giraud, with assistance from consultant Philippe Cambie, this estate has quickly risen into the tiny handful of top estates in Châteauneuf du Pape. "

Giraud Chateauneuf Tradition
Wine Advocate - Jeb Dunnuck: The 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape is 65% Grenache, 35% Syrah and 15% Mourvèdre, with the Grenache and Mourvèdre aged in concrete tanks and the Syrah in barrels. A terrific base cuvée that has loads to love, it offers lots of black cherries, blackcurrants, peppery herbs and licorice in a medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated style. It has a touch more concentration than the Prémices cuvée, but isn't as elegant or polished. 93 Points

Vinous - Josh Raynolds:
Bright ruby. Intense cherry and red berry aromas pick up notes of incense, anise and lavender with aeration. Spicy, concentrated and focused on the palate, offering appealingly sweet raspberry, cherry liqueur and floral pastille flavors underscored by a vein of juicy acidity. Closes sweet and quite long, with harmonious tannins building slowly and folding into the juicy fruit. 93 Points

Giraud Chateauneuf Gallimardes
Wine Spectator: Very seductive, with a note of Turkish coffee out front, quickly melding into a delicious mix of black currant, plum and boysenberry pâte de fruit flavors. Lots of black tea, incense and warm fruitcake details swirl throughout, while well-buried minerality keeps the finish lengthy and firmly grounded. This just gets bigger and bigger with aeration. 97 Points
Wine Advocate - Jeb Dunnuck:
The first vintage since 2011 where they've had large enough yields to make the cuvée, the 2015 Châteauneuf Cuvee Les Gallimardes is a blockbuster blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah, with the Grenache aged all in tank and the Syrah in new barrels. Its vibrant ruby/purple color is followed by sensational notes of black raspberries, crushed flowers, framboise, vanilla bean and licorice, and this beauty hits the palate with tons of richness, sweet tannin and a downright sexy texture that keeps you coming back to the glass. As always though, it stays balanced and light, with no heaviness. Under the inspired leadership of Marie Giraud, with assistance from consultant Philippe Cambie, this estate has quickly risen into the tiny handful of top estates in Châteauneuf du Pape. The style here incorporates a mix of traditional and progressive techniques, and while the Grenache is always kept in concrete tanks, they utilized smaller barrels for their Syrah. While they produced two seriously good 2014 Châteauneuf du Papes, their 2015s are blockbusters that I'll certainly be buying! 95-97 Points

Chateauneuf-du-Pape Les Grenaches de Pierre 2015

Pre Arrival Price $169.95
1500ml Magnum Landed Price $445.00
Pre Arrival Price $333.95

Giraud Pierre Label New Wine Spectator: Gorgeous, with black tea and warm anise aromas leading the way for a core of ganache, raspberry pâte de fruit, plum cake and blackberry compote flavors. Dense and fleshy, featuring a terrific bolt of graphite coursing through the back end. Inviting, but cellar this for maximum effect. Best from 2020 through 2040. 97 Points
Wine Advocate - Jeb Dunnuck:
The 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee Les Grenaches de Pierre comes from 1.7 hectares of sandy soils in the La Crau and Pignan lieux-dits, and there's less than 200 cases produced in a vintage. It shows a slightly darker, more peppery style, with lots of black cherries, wild strawberries, spice and licorice in its full-bodied, structured, yet still seamless style. It has a stacked mid-palate and blockbuster length, but patience will be your friend here. 94-96+ Points

Chateauneuf-du-Pape Les Gallimardes Blanc 2015
Landed Price $133.95
Pre Arrival Price $99.95

Giraud Gallimardes Blanc Label
Wine Spectator: This has some density, with peach, lemon curd and heather notes forming a ripe, flattering core, all offset by racy verbena and mirabelle plum accents on the finish. 92 Points
Wine Advocate - Jeb Dunnuck:
The just-bottled 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Gallimardes Blanc checks in as equal parts Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc and Roussanne, all of which came from the les Galimardes lieu-dit, and was aged mostly in stainless steel with 25% in new barrels. It's a lively, fresh and impeccably balanced white that has lots of juicy citrus rind, sappy flower, hints of pineapple and even mint in its medium-bodied, layered and length profile. 92 Points
