Last case. Planted in 1903! The Rare Gevrey-Chambertin Champerrier Vigne Centenaire 2015

114 year old vines produce a wine of enormous character...

Planted in 1903, of all the "vielles vignes" in Gevrey-Chambertin, Champerrier is certainly the "elder statesman". Seven generations have tended these vines and today Marchand-Grillot's low-cropping 0.72 hectare plot produces just 3 to 4 barrels annually of one of the commune's most absorbing wines.
Jacques Marchand wished to rediscover the taste of wine of yesteryear. After a severe harvest selection in the vineyard and on the sorting table, the vat is filled with whole bunches, and the fermentation and cellar ageing process takes place without the use of sulphur dioxide.
The wines arrived a month or so back and I have had great pleasure in tasting my way through all of the Marchand-Grillot wines.
The 1er Crus and Ruchottes-Chambertin are terrific but as I have said right from the start the wines here that really excite me are the Gevrey-Chambertin lieut-dits. I have tasted them all at least once since they arrived and I have not changed my mind. They are sensational. They remind me of a theoretical blend of Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny - a magic blend of aromatics, followed by power, texture and finesse.
Of these lieut-dits the one that really stands out the 100-year-old vine Champerrier. it is a super wine and my recent tasting confirmed my original thoughts that it is superior to many Gevrey Premier Crus. If you haven't tried I suggest you do. We only have just over a case left and for the next few days you can purchase it at a 15% discount.
Make sure you take a look at the full range from Marchand-Grillot. We still have 7 bottles of the rare Ruchottes-Chambertion 2015 left. Only 408 bottles of this wine were produced! To view the complete range click here.

Marchand-Grillot Champerrier label Darren Harris: On the same contour as Chambertin, Clos de Beze and Mazis-Chambertin. 100% whole bunch. This cuvee is made from the domaine's oldest vines - planted in 1903 - hence the name Vigne Centenaire. This is something different. The palate is special - mouth-filling, textured, vibrant. There's blackberries, liquorice, flowers, a creamy character from the old vines: the finish goes on and on. The character really old vines lends to wines is not to be underestimated. This is a lovely cuvee with more character and complexity than many Premier Crus.
