The string of small vintages from 2010 to 2016 have created enormous pressure on Burgundian winemakers, particularly those in the south of Burgundy where hail and frost has struck with disturbing regularity.
Many producers have been forced to draw on their reserve stocks and to ensure turnover have priced them at very reasonable prices.
Amongst my samples were two Santenay Villages from Charles Noellat. The wines have come direct from their cellars.
These are not Richebourg or Chambertin in disguise. They are however, perfectly aged wines from fine vintages and are drinking beautifully. Santenay has geological strata similar to the best of the Cote de Nuits and produces wines with staying power and structure. Having lain undisturbed for the best part of twenty years these wines are ready to drink. And they are crazy cheap. Would you age wines for over a decade and then sell them for less than your neighbour's basic wines? I think not.
We offer both the 2000 and 2001 at $39.95 - less than most generic Bourgogne from recent vintages. The domaine has done the hard work. You can now enjoy.

Darren Harris: Medium red with a little bricking. Plummy, sous bois, dry rose petal. Notes of leather. Still with fruit but fully mature. Medium dry finish. Has the charming character of the 2000 vintage which has produced many wines of pleasure. One to drink over the next 3 years.

Darren Harris:
Deeper than the 2000 with a garnet colour. Flavours of cassis, pencil shavings with liquored cherry notes in the background. Fresher with more acidity which drives the wine longer. More lively than 2000 but a little leaner with more defined tannins. Offers a wonderful snapshot of 2001 versus 2000.

Choupette Chalumaux 2016 Header

1er Cru Puligny for $99.95 a bottle
That's a bargain!
This wine from the Premier Cru Les Chalumaux is, considering the general shortfall in production in 2016, absolutely unbelievable value. Most Puligny Premier Crus will cost you around $200.00 a bottle. This is half the price. Where else can you buy 1er Cru Puligny for under $100.00?

Darren Harris: The Puligny Premier Cru les Chalumeaux is located across the border from Meursault 1er Cru Perrieres. Pear, grapefruit, lime. Stoney, a little hazelnut and a deft touch of toasty oak. Light and airy (the name Chalumaux comes from a mediaeval wind instrument oft seen on the tapestries in the Hospices de Beaune). Classic Puligny medium weight palate typical of the vineyards from higher up on the northern end of the commune. Fine acidity to finish. Drinks well now and over the next four years.
