Highly rated Premier Crus for under $50 a bottle! Remember the good old days!
More new and super reviews from the Wine Enthusiast magazine
Two weeks ago I had the pleasure of visiting Domaine Suremain for the first time. We tasted the full range of 2015's and 2016's as well as numerous older vintages over dinner. The tasting reinforced the critics views - these wines drink exceptionally well and are outstanding value for money.
Our first order is ready to ship and we have nearly sold out of many wines. If you are looking for Premier Crus to drink on a regular basis you simply can't go past these.
The Domaine de Suremain comprises 18 hectares of vines spread across some of Mercurey's finest appellations. The property has been in the same family for seven generations and is currently run by Yves and Loic Suremain.
A chance contact with an old acquaintance brought this lovely little domaine to my attention. These days is not often that highly rated Premier Crus can be found for under $50 so my interest was certainly piqued.
Domaine de Suremain have 6 different red Mercurey including 5 Premier Crus. They also have a white from the 1er Cru En Sazenay. And the prices are just tremendous, especially considering the consistently great reviews.
To tempt you even further we offer all wines at an introductory Pre Arrival Discount of 25%. That makes some of the red 1er Crus less than $50.00! Ah, remember the good old days!
Below are the six Premier Cru Crus. Mix and match a case before they all go. Make sure you take a look at the full range here.

Tim Atkin MW: A backward cuvée that finished its malolactic very late, this comes from an east-facing site and is the most closed of the de Suremain's Pinots in 2015, showing the richness of its clay-based soils. Grippy, smoky and profound, with aromatic pepper spice and red berry sweetness. 94 Points
Wine Spectator:
Ripe, vivid and juicy, this red delivers cherry, strawberry, floral and spice flavors, with a hint of mineral lining the finish. Shows structure, and should develop nicely over the next decade. Best from 2019 through 2029. 92 Points
Wine Enthusiast:
This is a perfumed wine, opulent and with a fine smoky structure. With great ripe berry and red-currant fruit, the wine has a juicy character, bright and crisp with acidity while also solidly textured. Drink this wine from 2023. 93 Points

Tim Atkin MW:
The 2015s are the best ever releases from this historic Mercurey domaine. Situated on a stony, east-facing terroir, this is a serious, compact Pinot that's made to age, showing tobacco leaf, succulent red and black fruits and skilfully integrated oak. 2020-28. 94 Points
Wine Spectator: Rich and packed with ripe cherry, currant and floral flavors. Firms up, with a stony, minerally essence on the finish. Feels balanced overall. Best from 2019 through 2028. 92 Points
Wine Enthusiast:
From perhaps the best known of Mercurey's premier crus, this is a firm solid wine, dense with tannins and concentrated berry fruits. It has a ripe character that is still embedded in the tannins. That means aging and this wine should not be drunk before 2023.
93 Points

Wine Spectator:
Firm and chalky, with underlying cherry, black currant and light tar flavors. Pure and mouthwatering, the tannins are bound to the effusive fruit. Shows excellent balance and length. Best from 2020 through 2033.
Wine Enthusiast: A seven-acre vineyard on the eastern side of Mercurey gives a wine that is broad and ripe. Both its structure and its juicy red fruits are generous and with a firm core of tannins. The wine is likely to age well. Drink from 2022. 93 Points

Wine Spectator:
Bright, with cherry and black currant fruit, this rich, round red picks up flourishes of earth and spice. Supple overall, finishing long and satisfying. Best from 2019 through 2030.
Wine Enthusiast:
The Suremain family winery in the main street of Mercurey has cellars going back to the 17th century. This wood-aged wine will have been kept here, where it has developed into a structured and firm wine, full of dry tannins as well as ripe red-berry fruits. Drink from 2023. 92 Points
