Is this Burgundy?
A must-try white wine from Chateauneuf-du-Pape

I arrived in France last Wednesday evening. The first stop of a busy trip was Domaine de la Solitude in Chateauneuf-du-Pape.
It is a wonderful estate with a long and fascinating history. And great wines. In recent years Florent Lancon has taken the reigns from his father and uncle. Florent has traveled extensively, his wine making experience including a stint at Yering Station in the Yarra. He has great vision and is a super winemaker bringing a worldliness to this grand estate.
My visit was to taste the new releases including a special "old-fashioned" cuvee Florent has been working on. We tasted the full range, some aged wines, and the special cuvee which is still in barrel. I also tasted some site specific barrels of ancient Grenache made with 100% whole bunch. Wow! But more of that another time.
The second wine of the tasting was the Chateauneuf-du-Pape Tradition Blanc 2016. The first sniff made my eyebrows rise a few centimetres. A white Rhone with style and precision! And a hint of complexing sulphides. So very Burgundy. I knew I was in for something special. The palate did not disappoint - it was just as the nose promised. Florent casually slipped in to the conversation that just that morning he had been advised by the Wine Spectator that the wine has received a massive 95 Point rating.
That was the good news. The bad news was that the wine had sold out. A little coercion and Florent found us 10 cases. But no more.
Like many of our clients I have a Burgundy palate. However, this wine is something that lovers of White Burgundy should seriously consider. It drinks at Premier Cru level and costs a fraction of the price. I want as many people to try it as possible so until the 10 Cases go I offer the wine at a 25% Pre Arrival Discount.

Wine Spectator: This is dreamy, with creamed melon, pear and green fig flavours gliding along, framed by light brioche and meringue notes. The long finish lets the fruit hang beautifully. Offers refined opulence. Drink now through 2022. 95 Points

Darren Harris: Stunning nose! Is this Burgundy? Fresh stonefruit and a lick of complexing sulphides. A blend of Roussanne, White Grenache and Clairette part matured in barrel, part with malo. I don't recall ever tasting a white Chateauneuf of this style. Refined flavours of stonefruits and minerals. Crisp and fresh. Mouthfilling. never heavy. There are elements of Premier Cru Chassagne-Montrachet. The 2016 vintage is being highly praised by the winemakers and this is a stunning example of what the new generation can achieve. I am in awe. Bravo Florent!
