The new 2006 Salon and more of the great 2004 and 2002

Incredible Champagne from Salon including the just released 2006

In the scheme of not only Champagne, but of wine in general, Salon sits in a very privileged place. A jewel in the Côte des Blancs with the sole mission to produce one single cuvée.

Salon Cuvee S is only produced in exceptional vintages and just 40 vintages have been deemed worthy in the years since creation in 1911 by the late Aimé Salon.

Last Friday we enjoyed the 2002, 2004 and just released 2006 Cuvee S at our dinner with Salon Export Director Mattieu Pouchan.

It was a rare treat to taste the three vintages alongside each other. What fantastic wines they are!

Today we present the new 2006 and a little 2004 and 2002 Salon.

Quantities are limited. Please note: prices for the 2004 and 2002 will rise next month.
P.S. Ever wondered what happens with the grapes when Salon is not produced? They go into the Delamotte Blanc de Blancs NV offered at right.

Vinous:  The 2006 Salon is a very rich wine, almost uncharacteristically so. Deep and exotic the 2006 exudes richness in all of its dimensions, with myriad inflections of sumptuous fruit that fill out its ample, large-scaled frame. Today, the 2006 is surprisingly accessible for a young Salon, but it needs time to shed some baby fat. At times, the 2006 recalls the 2002, but it appears to have more phenolic intensity and overall structure. Even with all of its flamboyance and pure volume, the 2006 retains quite a bit of energy and freshness. I imagine it will be a fascinating, utterly compelling Champagne to follow over the next several decades.  97 Points

Salon NV Label Antonio Galloni, Vinous:
The 2004 Salon has been superb each time I have tasted it over the last year or so. Bright, tense and crystalline, with all of the energy that is typical of both Salon and the vintage in the Côte des Blancs, the 2004 bristles with superb precision and cool, pulsating minerality. The 2004 spent a dozen years on its lees. Over the last six months or so, it has gradually begun to open up, but it is very much a wine for the cellar. Two thousand four is remembered as a vintage with record high yields. Salon (and Delamotte) did a terrific job in keeping the vines well balanced. Production was just 46,000 bottles, as opposed to the 60,000 or so that is more typical. Chef de Caves Michel Fauconnet opted for a low dosage of just 4 grams per liter. This is a tremendous showing.  97+ Points

James Suckling MW:
2004 Salon weaves together immense complexity with stunning purity and makes instant impact on the nose with fresh-baked pastry and brioche, chalky minerals, fresh white mushroom, cucumber, lemon curd and striking lemon and lime citrus fruits. The palate has an almost smoky mineral thread, toasty autolytic flavors build and expand through the mid-palate, opening to grapefruit and ripe white peach flavours, lemon sorbet and very lightly grilled hazelnuts to close. This is an impressively layered Blanc de Blancs in which bright acidity supports the flavorsome, concentrated and fleshy texture in seamless balance. A great Salon, very composed and complex in every respect, a classically styled vintage in which this legendary Champagne has excelled. It will be a fascinatingly complex Champagne with further age. Drink now and for 10+ years. 98 Points

Wine Enthusiast:  The 37th and most recent vintage of Salon since the house was founded in 1905 is memorable and magnificent. Made only from Chardonnay grown in the Grand Cru village of Les Mesnil-sur-Oger, it combines intense minerality, a crisp textured core and the beginnings of maturity. The depths of this wine, with its layers of fruit and steeliness, are superb. Even after 12 years, it still needs to age further. Drink from 2018. 100 Points
James Suckling Tasting Report: The 2002 Salon is phenomenal quality. (...) It is a subtle and intense Champagne that shows complex character of lilac, minerals, sliced lemon, apple and white pepper. It is full body and dense yet racy and agile with a lightness and freshness. It has a gloriously long finish. It changes every moment in the glass. It has such clarity. It's magnificient to drink now, but shows great texture and structure for aging. 99 Points

Delamotte BdB 2007

Serious Blanc de Blancs from Salon's Sister House Delamotte

A great champagne is first and foremost a great wine. This is the challenge that drives Maison Delamotte and its sister house, the legendary House of Salon, both of which are located in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, one of the most prized Grand Cru Villages of the Côté des Blancs.

In 1760, Champagne Delamotte was one of only five Champagne houses in the region. Located in the heart of the Côte des Blancs in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger it is the sister house to the mythical House of Champagne Salon with which it shares the same viticultural, winemaking and management team, both run by Didier Depond.

Vineyard location is the key that guides Delamotte's expression defining the house's elegant, focused style of wine. A house like no other with all its vineyards sourced from the Grands crus of the Côte des Blancs, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger, Avize and Cramant for chardonnay, Delamotte is one of the very few negociants to cultivate such a passion for the expression of this unique ward of Champagne.
