Arriving Soon... Domaine Jomain Puligny 1er Crus / Rare DRC RSV MAGNUM 2002

Jomain 1er Crus Header
A terrific new domaine in Puligny-Montrachet with super wines at excellent prices

Our first shipment from Domaine Jomain arrives in a couple of weeks. The shipment contains two serious 1er Crus from Puligny-Montrachet, both at great prices.

Whilst in Burgundy earlier this year I was leafing through Bill Nanson's The Finest Wines of Burgundy A Guide to the Best Producers of the Cote d'Or and Their Wines when I can across Domaine Jomain - in Puligny-Montrachet.

Puligny-Montrachet is small and I have driven through it so many times that I was surprised that I had not seen their name on one of the many signs directing people to producers. The fact that they were in Nanson's book alongside the well-known, big names of Burgundy suggested some investigation was warranted.

I contacted the domaine and was invited to visit and taste the wines the following day. I arrived at the address supplied only to find I could could not locate the domaine. A quick call to Philippe Jomain and I heard a voice from up one of the side lanes calling to me. There was indeed a sign out the front but the location explained why I had never seen it.

Domaine Jomain is small - just 8 hectares - but they have some prime appellations. The wonderful vineyards are terrific but the small size of the domaine proved to be a problem.

Philippe started me with their Bourgogne Chardonnay 2015. The fruit comes from Puligny-Montrachet, half in barrel and half in stainless steel. It was quite simply one of the best Bourgogne blancs that I have ever tasted. He then gave me the bad news - the wine was completely sold out.

Philippe went on to tell me that virtually all of their 2014's and 2015's had sold out and that they had almost nothing to offer me. I was feeling a little frustrated. Great vineyards, great vintages and nothing to buy. Arrgh!

However, after some to and froing he managed to find me a little wine and today I present a pair of super Puligny Premier Crus.

As a new addition to our portfolio we offer offer both wines at a special 25% Pre Arrival Discount. That makes this wine seriously good value.

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrieres 2014
Landed Price $157.95
Special Pre Arrival Price $118.50 (Save 25%)

Jomain Perrieres label
Bill Nanson "The Burgundy Report": Also more floral but this time a wider and more elegant nose. Weight of flavour here, it saturates the palate - there is also minerality too. On the other hand here is richness and less energy, yet the acidity slowly shines through. More contemplative wine, but one that I would be happy to wait for...

Darren Harris: 6 barrels in 2014. There are numerous Perrieres vineyards in Burgundy and they always indicate the presence of stone - in this case from the remnants of old quarries. The stone always ensures a mineral complexity. Very pure and mineral on the nose. Citrus, flowers and cold, white stones. There is a beautiful elegance combined with piercing Puligny freshness. A real dancer on the palate. Saline, racy and long and I have to say delicious. Classic Puligny-Montrachet and such good value.

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes 2015
Landed Price $182.95
Special Pre Arrival Price $137.50 (Save 25%)

Jomain Combettes Label Bill Nanson "The Burgundy Report": A nose to fall into; slightly cushioned by sweet oak, it's an inviting sweet yellow citrus too. Hmm... again slightly padded by oak, but just a really beautiful mouth-watering sweet acidity with flavours very much to the mineral side. There's a little richness here, but simply a gorgeousness too - bravo. Decadent drinking!

Darren Harris: Unmistakable Puligny nose of flowers, citrus, stonefruit and minerals. A little richer both on the nose and palate than the 2014 Perrieres tasted prior, but still with exceptional freshness and vivacity. Terrific intensity and mouthfeel, refined and palate coating, with vibrant fruit balanced by Puligny's inherent acidity.

DRC RSV Mood
Rare MAGNUM of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Romanee-St-Vivant 2002
From a climate controlled private cellar we offer a rare Magnum of DRC Romanee-St-Vivant 2002. The bottle is in superb condition with an excellent level.
Be quick, only one available.
Vinous, Stephen Tanzer: Medium red with a palish rim. Very sexy aromas and flavors of cherry, dried rose, cinnamon and herbs. Not an opulent style but boasts terrific definition and energy to its strong cherry and berry flavors accented by pepper and leather. This very young, tight RSV needs either a few hours in a decanter or another 5+ years in the cellar. Will eventually go truffley and underbrushy but there's no sign of tertiary aromas today. Cellarmaster Bernard Noble noted that "there are some regrets about 2002: we could have waited another four or five days to pick. At this stage, our '02s show less flesh and more spirit."
(Drink between 2022-2038) 95+ Points
Burghound: Highly aromatic, indeed almost kaleidoscopic in the sheer breadth of aromas but it's the spice that is so remarkable though it is now cut with floral and stem hints that add depth. The medium-bodied flavors are quite fine with beautiful detail, indeed they are chiseled, and a drop dead gorgeous velvety texture that is soft in the middle yet quite firm on the exceptionally long finish that still displays the slightest hint of wood. The overall character here is rather discreet and understated and while there is plenty of character, it's clear that this is built along the lines of elegance and finesse. In this format, this should require most of 20 years to arrive at its peak. (Drink starting 2020)

Vintage Tastings, John Kapon:
A magnum of 2002 DRC Romanee St. Vivant had great spice, power and character. Mint, menthol, leather and tar combined in outstanding fashion. I should note this was more impressive out of magnum, slightly but noticeably, than a bottle I had a month later in New York. Magnums can be better, but every bottle is different anyway. 95+ Points
