2016 Monopole Magic Be Quick! / Domaine Gauby

Chartron 2016 Monopole Header
Almost Gone! Be quick if you wish to secure some 2016 Whites from Domaine Jean Chartron
Domaine Jean Chartron has a magnificent range of wines from Puligny-Montrachet and nearby.
In addition to the Grand Crus there is a range of Premier Crus of which two always stand out as extremely special wines. Both are Clos (a walled vineyard) and both are Monopoles (a single owner).
The wines are Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Pucelle and 1er Cru Clos du Cailleret.
The vineyards themselves are well situated. Between them they adjoin all of the Grand Cru vineyards in Puligny-Montrachet. Not surprisingly the wines have more than their fair share of Grand Cru style. They are both complex, mineral, stylish and long. I rate them above the 1er Crus of another famous maker who costs around twice the price.

After just one day we have almost sold out of our 2016 Allocation from Domaine Jean Chartron. Numerous wines are completely gone but we still have a small quantity of the two super monopoles and the always popular St-Aubin 1er Crus Les Murgers des Dents de Chien.

Domaine Gauby 2011-2012
Prestige Cuvee
3-Bottle Pack

Domaine Gauby is located 30 km southwest of Perpignan just outside the town of Calce. This area of France, on the border of Spain, is Roussillon. It is a beautiful and rugged part of the world. It is still very unspoiled, wild, rocky and dry. There are a lot of rugged hills with soils composed of limestone, marl and shale - ideal for cultivation of grapes.

The Gauby family established their domaine in 1983. There are around 45 hectares of vines scattered in parcels over the hillsides around the village. Gerard Gauby has worked hard to enlarge the estate from the 5 hectares purchased by his grandfather and today the vines include some 120 year old Carignan as well as very old Mourvedre, Grenache and Syrah. The domaine is biodynamic and produce their own vegetal preparations to apply to the vines. Weeds are grown between rows to compete with the vines forcing the roots down deeper in the rich and complex soils. The combination of old vines and the vineyard practices means extremely low yields of around 20 hl/ha.

Gerard Gauby is now firmly established as one of the superstars of the south-west. He believes that the superb quality of his wines is determined more by the character and quality of the grapes that are harvested rather than what happens in the winery. "One of our greatest advantages in the complexity of our local soils". The best wines come from schist as the vines must go deep to find nourishment. it also keeps the acidity high. "I don't like sur-maturite. I'm looking for fresh fruit. Burgundy is my reference. I want the same purity in my wines" say Gerard. These are fine, complex and thought-provoking wines.

This Pack comprises
comprises La Muntada 2011 and 2012 and the even rarer La Jasse 2011. For fans, or those simply curious about these cult wines, this is a great opportunity to try some of the very best.
