Bichot IWC2017 photo 13 years after being awarded Red Winemaker of the Year 2004, and also White Winemaker of the Year 2011, Albert Bichot is particularly proud and honored to be given the title of Red Winemaker of the Year 2017.
This new prestigious honour awards the daily efforts of their teams. The attention paid to all details from the vineyards to the winery and uncompromizing choices in terms of quality have been appreciated.

The International Wine Challenge is one of the most renowned and largest competition in the world with more than 14,000 wines tasted.

This recognition of the quality of Albert Bichot wines follows other very good results regularly obtained in the French and international media over the last 20 years.
Bichot's success at the International Wine Challenge 2015 was quite unbelievable. With 12 Gold Medals and 13 Trophies it was a result I am sure even they did not contemplate. Not surprisingly, they have been awarded the Red Wine Maker of the Year 2017 award.

Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2015
Landed Price $495.00
Pre Arrival Price $420.50

Frantin Clos Vougeot
Steen Ohman Winehog.org: The Clos de Vougeot is also showing fine form - although this is perhaps not the ideal vintage for this slightly dense terroir. The nose offer layers of relatively dark fruit spiced with chocolate and a fine earthy minerality - textbook Clos de Vougeot. On the palate juicy and quite weighty fruit - silky with a quite fine energy and freshness. A very fine Clos de Vougeot in the making ... well done. 93-94 Points

Echezeaux Grand Cru 2015
Landed Price $495.00
Pre Arrival Price $420.50
9 bottles left

Frantin Echezeaux Steen Ohman Winehog.org: The Echezeaux is a bit more backward offering more dark fruit ... The bouquet offer ripe red and dark berry fruit - fine minerality. On the palate intense fruit - balanced, long and ripe with a fine mineralic backbone The fruit is juicy but lacking the nerve and energy of the truly magnificent Grands Echezeaux. Need plenty of time to unfold
. 93-94 Points

Richebourg Grand Cru 2015
Landed Price $1795.00
Pre Arrival Price $1525.00
2 bottles left

Frantin Richebourg Steen Ohman Winehog.org: The mighty Richebourg is last - but not least. It's a vinous wine - but yet very refined and delicate. In the nose layers of fresh and juicy fruit - expressive and floral with a considerable intensity. On the palate layers of ripe fruit - excellent concentration and length. A quite "lightfooted" wine - in the best sense of the word - with an effortless and airy presentation of the abundant but energetic fruit ... great minerality in the finish - I really enjoyed this wine.
 95-97 Points

Chambertin Grand Cru 2015
Landed Price $995.00
Pre Arrival Price $845.00
18 bottles left

Frantin Chambertin Label Steen Ohman Winehog.org: The Chambertin is another step up in intensity - yet it's a remarkably refined and floral wine. The nose offer juicy red and dark berry fruit brought forward by a very intense minerality .. very floral confirming that Gevrey did very well in this vintage. On the palate intense and concentrated but still lightfooted and refined .. impressive what the best terroirs can offer in terms of backbone and focus. An outstanding Le Chambertin .. bigger and better than the Grands Echezeaux? - yes perhaps .. but prefer the exuberant energy of the GE

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 2015
750ml Landed Price $685.00
Pre Arrival Price $582.00
1500ml Magnum Landed Price $1450.00
Landed Price $1234.00
2 bottles and 4 Magnums left

Bichot Amoureuses Label Wine Advocate - Neal Martin: The 2015 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Amoureuses, which contains 20-25% whole bunch fruit, has a surprisingly understated bouquet when considering both the precocity of the vintage and the esteemed vineyard in question. It gently unfurls with red cherries, strawberry preserve, crushed rose petals and wet stone. This is very classy and dare I say, I might mistake it for say one of Christophe Roumier's wines. The palate is very refined with crisp acidity, shimmering red cherry and strawberry fruit, superb mineralité and great tension on the finish. Do not underestimate this Amoureuses, because I suspect it will have a long and prosperous future.

Frantin Malconsorts Label
2015 Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Malconsorts
Tete de Cuvee
Last 18 bottles
Bichot Malconsorts Tete sticker
Late last year an idea was hatched. What if I could select the barrel of Domaine du Clos Frantin Malconsorts that I wanted? I thought it might simply be wishful thinking but to my surprise the idea was greeted with a very positive response.

Things developed and on Wednesday 28 March 2017 I sat down with winemaker Cyrille Jacquelin and Export Manager Christian Ciamos to participate in one of the most exciting tastings of my life.

Domaine du Clos Frantin are the largest owner of Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Malconsorts. They own 1.76 hectares of the 5.86 hectare appellation. What I didn't know was the domaine's holdings are spread across the appellation in a number of separate parcels. The elevations, soils and vine-age vary. And like all plots in Burgundy the character of the grapes they produce is not the same.

Cyrille presented eight barrel samples from four areas in Malconsorts. The different parcels are vinified independently and are fine tuned to match the character of the grapes. Just before bottling the parcels are all assembled into one cuvee.

We all tasted silently. What was amazing was the varying character of the samples. Different parts of the vineyard produced wines with distinct characters. Those from towards the right displayed more structure and less fruit, the middle had more fruit weight and those from the top left exhibited more spice and power. On top of that the domaine uses a mix of Francois Freres, Seguin-Moreau and Taransaud barrels. These all imparted different elements but it was the character of the grapes that was the real variable.

After tasting and retasting we reached the point where Christian and I named our top three wines. The amazing thing was we had independently reached the same conclusion. Samples 5, 7 and 8 were the favoured wines. One from the middle and two from the upper left. Sample 5 (from the middle) was a lovely wine with creamy soft fruit and beautiful balance - but not what I wanted from my barrel select Malconsorts. It then came down to samples 7 (in Seguin Moreau oak) and 8 (in Taransaud oak). After some consideration I opted for sample 8.

Sample 8 came from the upper left of Malconsorts. Here the vines are the oldest - averaging 45 years of age. The soil is quite sandy which adds spice, power and line. Cyrille opts to use a higher percentage of whole bunch here (60% versus 35-40% for on the right) as the grapes have substance to handle the stems in a ripe year like 2015.

My picture of a great Malconsorts is a wine with deep, dark fruit, fine spice and not too full in the mid palate. Perhaps most of all the wine must have a long, fine finish - something like what white lovers see in Chevalier-Montrachet. It must be balanced but on the slightly structured side - more Richebourg power than Romanee-St-Vivant juice. In the end it was the monumentally long finish that sample 8 displayed that made my final decision easy.

The choice made it was time to hear what Cyrille had to say. Cyrille explained that the upper left is known for providing the defining character of the wine. It does not supply the sweeter fruit flavours but adds the hard to define intellectual element that makes this great vineyard unique. And what was Cyrille's number one pick - it too was sample 8. That made me feel very good.

So for vintage 2015 Australia will have a unique Tete de Cuvee Domaine du Clos Frantin Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Malconsorts. ":Our barrel" hs been bottled independently in 750ml bottles. It will have a special label to distinguish the wine from the regular cuvee available everywhere else. I am very confident we have selected the very best that this vineyard can deliver.

The regular release is an outstanding wine having won a Gold Medal and Trophy for the Best Vosne-Romanee at the International Wine Challenge and a Gold Medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards.

Our Tete de Cuvee bottling is tighter, longer and will appeal to lovers of classic Malconsorts. It is an exceptional wine that will require a little more patience in the cellar.
