2002 and 2004 Salon: Two almost Perfect Champagnes

Salon 2002 2004 Header
Incredible Champagne from Salon

In the scheme of not only Champagne, but of wine in general, Salon sits in a very privileged place. A jewel in the Côte des Blancs with the sole mission to produce one single cuvée, the latest 2004 release is only the 39th vintage deemed worthy in the years since creation in 1911 by the late Aimé Salon.

Both the 2002 and 2004 have been incredibly well reviewed. The 2002 receiving perfect scores from several respected critics.

Today we present both the 2002 and 2004 vintages in bottle and magnum. Salon is produced entirely from Chardonnay and is from a single cru in the Champagne region - vineyards surrounding Le Mesnil-sur-Oger."

Wine Enthusiast: The 37th and most recent vintage of Salon since the house was founded in 1905 is memorable and magnificent. Made only from Chardonnay grown in the Grand Cru village of Les Mesnil-sur-Oger, it combines intense minerality, a crisp textured core and the beginnings of maturity. The depths of this wine, with its layers of fruit and steeliness, are superb. Even after 12 years, it still needs to age further. Drink from 2018. 100 Points

James Suckling Tasting Report:
The 2002 Salon is phenomenal quality. (...) It is a subtle and intense Champagne that shows complex character of lilac, minerals, sliced lemon, apple and white pepper. It is full body and dense yet racy and agile with a lightness and freshness. It has a gloriously long finish. It changes every moment in the glass. It has such clarity. It's magnificient to drink now, but shows great texture and structure for aging. 99 Points

Salon NV Label Antonio Galloni, Vinous:
The 2004 Salon has been superb each time I have tasted it over the last year or so. Bright, tense and crystalline, with all of the energy that is typical of both Salon and the vintage in the Côte des Blancs, the 2004 bristles with superb precision and cool, pulsating minerality. The 2004 spent a dozen years on its lees. Over the last six months or so, it has gradually begun to open up, but it is very much a wine for the cellar. Two thousand four is remembered as a vintage with record high yields. Salon (and Delamotte) did a terrific job in keeping the vines well balanced. Production was just 46,000 bottles, as opposed to the 60,000 or so that is more typical. Chef de Caves Michel Fauconnet opted for a low dosage of just 4 grams per liter. This is a tremendous showing.  97+ Points

James Suckling MW:
2004 Salon weaves together immense complexity with stunning purity and makes instant impact on the nose with fresh-baked pastry and brioche, chalky minerals, fresh white mushroom, cucumber, lemon curd and striking lemon and lime citrus fruits. The palate has an almost smoky mineral thread, toasty autolytic flavors build and expand through the mid-palate, opening to grapefruit and ripe white peach flavours, lemon sorbet and very lightly grilled hazelnuts to close. This is an impressively layered Blanc de Blancs in which bright acidity supports the flavorsome, concentrated and fleshy texture in seamless balance. A great Salon, very composed and complex in every respect, a classically styled vintage in which this legendary Champagne has excelled. It will be a fascinatingly complex Champagne with further age. Drink now and for 10+ years. 98 Points
