Right Next Door - Well Sited Premier Crus

Right Next Door Header
Well connected wines...
The many terroirs of Burgundy are what provides its undying charm and attraction for aficionados.

The classification system has been borne out over the centuries and in the most parts appears quite correct.

However, there are many vineyards in the Cote d'Or that share borders with their illustrious Grand Cru cousins and manage, not unsurprisingly, to display many of the attributes of their big brothers. Today we feature eight well-connected Premier Crus.
All are available at Pre Arrival or Special Prices. This is 15% for most wines but for some newly featured additions to our portfolio we have increased this to 25%.

Domaine Fernand and Laurent Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Vide-Bourse 2015
Landed Price $154.95
Pre Arrival Price $131.50
Pillot Vide Bourse Label
A downslope continuation of Batard-Montrachet. Jasper Morris says "In many ways it is a 'petit Batard'".

Very mild reduction isn't enough to completely mask the notably ripe and softly exotic white orchard fruit aromas that are trimmed in floral and lychee nut hints. There is a lavish, even opulent, mouth feel to the exceptionally rich flavors that brim with dry extract that buffers the moderately firm acid spine on the bitter lemon-inflected finish. I very much like the complexity and this beauty should drink well both young and with age. 90-93 Points

Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Au Closeau 2015
Landed Price $182.95
Pre Arrival Price $155.50

Drouhin-Laroze Closeau label Across the Route de Grand Cru from Mazis-Chambertin.

The Fine Wine Review:
I don't believe I've ever encountered an example of this well-sited premier cru (across the road from Mazis-Chambertin, an inlet in La Perrière) other than from Drouhin-Laroze. The wine has juicy dark fruits with some crystallinity and good length. 91-95 Points

Domaine Georges Lignier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Combottes 2015
Landed Price $252.50
Special Pre Arrival Price $182.95

Lignier Combottes Label 96 All but surrounded by Grand Crus - Latricieres-Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin and Bonnes-Mares.

Tim Atkin MW:
A Premier Cru that's "a bit more than a Premier Cru," according to Benoit Stehly, this is tucked between two Grands Crus yet is something of a below-the-radar wine. Smoky and intense, with lovely precision and focus supported by textured tannins and lingering acidity. 2022-30. 94 Points

Domaine Morey-Coffinet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Blanchots Dessus 2015
In Stock Normally $229.95
Special $195.50
Only 7 left

Adjoins Le Montrachet.

Burghound: (from a miniscule .064 ha parcel of 25+ year old vines; Blanchots-Dessus abuts Montrachet on its southern end). This is firmly reduced today though my sense is that it will likely progressively dissipate with age. Otherwise there is more size, weight and muscle to the beautifully concentrated big-bodied flavors that are a bit less mineral-driven on the slightly more complex finish. This robust effort isn't refined but it is impressive. A Sweet Spot Wine

Domaine Bertagna Vougeot 1er Cru Clos de la Perriere Monopole 2015
Landed Price $22995
Special Pre Arrival Price $172.50

Bertagna Vougeot Perriere label
Surrounded on three sides by Musigny, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses and Clos Vougeot.

Darren Harris: A monopoly of the domaine measuring a substantial 2.2 hectares in size. The vineyard is surrounded on three sides by Musigny, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses and Clos Vougeot. Deep colour. Aromatic nose of violets, dark fruits, spice and minerals. Mouth-filling and supple with sophisticated flavours and a long, precise mineral finish. This is really very stylish and fine with restrained power. If you were to imagine a hypothetical blend of the three serious vineyards surrounding Clos de la Perriere it would taste something like this.

Domaine Jerome Chezeaux Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Suchots 2015
Landed Price $217.95
Pre Arrival Price $184.95

Jerome Chezeaux Suhots Label 8cm
Right alongside Richebourg and Romanee-St-Vivant.

Darren Harris: Vibrant red colour. A little closed to start then with some air the wine gushes forth with a nose of violets, cherry, spice and minerals. This is not a heavy weight but the aromatics are so pure and fine that the wine is almost hauntingly beautiful. The nuances come in gentle waves. The palate has the flavours, lift and weightlessness that the nose suggests driven by a long spine of minerals and acidity. It is fine and so delicious. Elegance personified!

Domaine Roblot-Marchand Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuees 2015
Landed Price $141.50
Pre Arrival Price $120.50

Roblot-marchand Fuees label An extension of Bonnes-Mares.

Darren HarrisMedium colour, palish at the centre. Elegant aromas of raspberry, strawberry, marzipan, bitter cherry, minerals. Complex. Fresh. It is very sleek and elegant but oh, so long. A dancer. Classic Chambolle femininity in the middle but finishing with the structure of a serious vintage. Benchmark Chambolle and I love it!.

Bill Nanson, The Burgundy Report:
Pretty and high-toned floral aromas. Tighter, linear, more a growing insinuation of flavour, more finishing concentration. Mouth-wateringly long! Good but a wine to wait for - it's not fully open as tasty as it is!

Domaine Jean-Michel Guillon Morey-St-Denis 1er Cru La Riotte 2015
Landed Price $224.50
Pre Arrival Price $190.95

Guillon Riotte Label
Situated below Clos de la Roche

Burghound: Ample wood fights somewhat with the otherwise wonderfully fresh and bright red cherry, floral and softly earth-scented aromas. There is both good vibrancy and refinement to the lightly mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that possess a lovely mouth feel though the wood is very much present on the finish. The underlying material is probably sufficient to eat the wood and my predicted range assumes that it will. 90-92 Points

Quarles Harris 1977 Port Label

Quarles Harris Vintage Port 1977
8 bottles left
At 40 years of age this wine is now in its drinking window. Sourced direct from the house.
Jancis Robinson: Healthy ruby with a brick rim. Quite subtle already; there is some perceptible evolution of colour and flavour here. Mineral rather than fruit flavours dominate. Very big and full. Very, very sweet indeed - in fact I thought it was from a Portuguese house. This wine delivers a pretty good combination of power, interest and, especially, sweetness. This is not a wine to be ignored! But it's a very particular style....without enormous tannic reserves.
