Premier Cru Collection. 8 Highly Rated Wines from 2015

Premier Cru Collection Header
Super wines from 2015

Whilst prices for Grand Crus continue to rise at very rapid rates, Premier Crus, in most cases, have taken a more gradual path.

Today I feature eight of my favourite Premier Crus from eight different producers. The selection includes some of the best vineyards from the most popular communes.
All are available at Pre Arrival Prices. This is 15% for most wines but for some newly featured additions to our portfolio we have increased this to 25%.

Domaine Bertagna Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 2015
Landed Price $229.95
Special Pre Arrival Price $172.50
Bertagna Beaux Monts Label
Darren Harris:
Extremely deep colour. Rich and powerful nose of black cherry, violets, spice and Asian tea. Sleek and rich in the mouth with excellent definition and significant muscle. Complex fuits and spices mingle with florals and dusty new oak (the wine saw 50%). Persistent and long with a mineral-infused spine and fine-grained tannins. This is a serious wine that is built to cellar.

Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Chenes 2015
Landed Price $183.95
Pre Arrival Price $156.50

Bitouzet Chenes new Vinous, Stephen Tanzer:
(11% vendange entier; from three ages of vines, the oldest of them planted in 1976): Good dark red. Pure, high-pitched, slightly medicinal scents of raspberry, blackberry, licorice and spices, plus hints of herbs and pepper. A very rich, sappy wine with a restrained sweetness and captivating saline minerality to its dark raspberry and boysenberry fruit flavors. Finishes with firm but well-integrated tannins and subtle power and length. This beauty is a bit higher in pH and lower in acidity than the Caillerets, and will probably give pleasure earlier. 92-94 Points

Domaine Georges Lignier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Combottes 2015
Landed Price $252.50
Special Pre Arrival Price $182.95

Lignier Combottes Label 4.1 Tim Atkin MW:
A Premier Cru that's "a bit more than a Premier Cru," according to Benoit Stehly, this is tucked between two Grands Crus yet is something of a below-the-radar wine. Smoky and intense, with lovely precision and focus supported by textured tannins and lingering acidity. 2022-30. 94 Points

Domaine Jean Chauvenet Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains 2015
Landed Price $241.95
Pre Arrival Price $205.50

Chauvenet Vaucrains Label Burghound:
(from a .41 ha parcel). An exuberantly fresh and unusually expressive nose offers up notes of leather, plum, violet, spice and plenty of earth influence. Somewhat curiously relative to past vintages, the mouth feel of the focused, intense and powerful flavors is less rustic than usual though to be sure this is still very Vaucrains in style as there is plenty of punch and youthful austerity present on the driving and hugely long finish. Vaucrains is one of the longest-lived Nuits 1ers and this particular example will be no exception. Impressive. 2030+. 92-94 Points

Domaine Jean-Michel Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru La Petite Chapelle 2015
Landed Price $265.95
Pre Arrival Price $225.95

Guillon Petit Chapelle Label Burghound:
(from 50+ year old vines). Much more modulated wood and reduction make the nose difficult to assess today. By contrast there is both good vibrancy and freshness to the notably more refined medium weight flavors that also exude a subtle minerality on the super-saline, balanced and impressively long finish. This is also quite refreshing and while it would be infanticide to open one early, this just makes one feel like drinking it. Worth considering. 2025+. 91-93 Points

Domaine Marchand-Grillot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru La Perriere 2015
Landed Price $169.95
Special Pre Arrival Price $127.50

marchand-grillot perrier label Darren Harris: Deeper, more stony nose. Cherries, plums, licorice root, crushed rock with a real mineral drive. Serious. Very long on the finish with defined tannins that are firmer than the other wines but still very fine. The vineyard lies below Mazis-Chambertin and one can draw many similarities between the two sites. My style of wine!

Domaine Michel Noellat Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots 2015
Landed Price $239.50
Pre Arrival Price $203.50

Noellat NSG Boudots label Wine Advocate - Neal MartinThe 2015 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots demonstrated a little reduction on the nose when I tasted it from barrel, though there was clearly plenty of fruit underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit tinged with black pepper and licorice. I appreciate the energy conveyed by this Nuits Saint-Georges and it gently fans out towards the "confident" finish, offering a lovely peppery aftertaste. 91-93 Points

Seguin-Manuel Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Charmes 2015
Landed Price $231.95
Special Pre Arrival Price $173.95

Seguin-Manuel Chambolle Charmes Label Wine Advocate - Neal Martin: The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes was aged in one-year-old barrels. There was a lingering touch of reduction on the nose, though underneath lies pleasant red plum and redcurrant aromas tinged with wilted rose petals. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, plenty of ripe and rounded red cherry and strawberry fruit with very fine precision on the finish. This is an excellent Chambolle-Musigny from Thibault. 91-93 Points

Doudet Vergelesses

Doudet-Naudin Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru Vergelesses 2001
19 bottles left
One of the prime sites in Savigny, lying just about the Pernand-Verglesses vineyard of the same name. The sandy-marl soil with iron-rich oolite in the upper levels produces a wine with great perfume and style.
Darren Harris: Powerful nose of plum, mineral and dark berries. A little Savigny earth. Palate is deep, with sweet fruit finishing with fresh acidity. Still quite muscular. The wine is energetic with fine length. An unashamedly old-style Burgundy where new oak played no part. Hence the ability to age so gracefully. The benefits of storage in the cool, dark cellars of the domaine are evident.
