Three top Echezeaux from the Great 2015 Vintage

Echezeaux 2015 Header
Three super 2015 Echezeaux from different climats
Echezeaux is a large Grand Cru of 37.69 hectares. Like Clos Vougeot, it was the Cistercian monks who developed the vineyards here.

With such a large area it is certain that the terroir is going to vary across the appellation and Echezeaux actually has eleven lieux-dits, and, were it not Grand Cru, could easily be split into 11 different Crus.
Of course there is always discussion about which climats are best but like all Burgundy the quality of the producer always plays a big part in the final wine.
Today I present 3 Echezeaux all from different parts of the vineyard. All are seriously good (Echezeaux is often mentioned as one of the outstanding performers in 2015) and together they form a great comparative tasting for scholars of Grand Cru Burgundy.

All wines are available at a 15% Pre Arrival Discount.

Frantin Echezeaux Tim Atkin MW: The Bichot parcel is located in the Champs Traversins lieu-dit, where it is influenced by the proximity of the Combe d'Orveau. This is the best Clos Frantin Echézeaux I've ever tasted, achieving new levels of finesse and balance. Floral, bright and textured with very subtle oak. 2022-30. 96 Points
Steen Ohman The Echezeaux is a bit more backward offering more dark fruit ... The bouquet offer ripe red and dark berry fruit - fine minerality. On the palate intense fruit - balanced, long and ripe with a fine mineralic backbone The fruit is juicy but lacking the nerve and energy of the truly magnificent Grands Echezeaux. Needs plenty of time to unfold. 93-94 Points

Noellat Echezeaux NV Label Wine Advocate - Neal Martin: The 2015 Echézeaux du Dessus Grand Cru has a composed, refined and sophisticated bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit that is well defined and seems to blossom in the glass. I appreciate the sense of Pinoté here. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, hints of orange rind and brown spices unfolding towards a satisfyingly harmonious and quite intense finish that avoids any over-ripeness. It represents an excellent Echézeaux from the domaine and it should offer 12-15 years of drinking pleasure. 91-93 Points

Darren Harris:
From the climat Echezeaux Du Dessus. A sway of wonderful aromas waft from the glass. Aromatic, spicy and so, so stylish. The palate is of medium weight with all the nuance that the nose presents. There is lovely intensity created by perfect ripeness. In fact the character of the wine reminds me of Grands Echezeaux with its sappiness and spice and long and velvety mouth feel. This is a cracking wine.

Seguin-Manuel Echezeaux Grand Cru 2015
Normal Price $430.50
Pre Arrival Price $322.95

Seguin-Manuel Echezeaux label Wine Advocate - Neal Martin: The 2015 Echézeaux Grand Cru was still showing some reduction on the nose when I tasted it. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, ripe black and red fruit here with a chalky texture towards the second half. Nicely balanced, it is a little more masculine than expected, but with plenty of freshness, so drink this over the next 12 -15 years. 91-93 Points

Darren Harris:
Just a single barrel in 2015 (300 bottles for the world). New oak. From En Orveaux. Just about to be bottled when tasted. Elegant and deep nose of black-red fruit and a hint of toasty new oak. The palate manages to show power and finesse at the same time which is a hallmark of serious Burgundy. Terrific length. Really very impressive. The style of the vintage 2015 has produced many quality Echezeaux and this is a top example.

fougeray beauclair vosne label
Domaine Fougeray de Beauclair Vosne-Romanee Les Damodes 2015
15 bottles left
Les Damodes (or Les Damaudes as it is also labelled) adjoins the 1er Cru Les Malconsorts. La Tache is only metres away. It lies 300 metres above sea level - on the same contour as the Premier Crus Aux Reignots and Les Petits Monts which can't be bad!  I only know of the two makers - Fougeray de Beauclair and Bertrand Ambroise.
Darren Harris:
A 0.25 hectare parcel of 55 year old vines adjoining Les Malconsorts on the Nuits-St-Georges border. Most producers use the spelling "Damaudes", however, Fougerey de Beaclair choose the Nuits spelling "Damodes". A cool nose of black-red fruits - raspberry, blackberry with spice, violets and little smoke. Very aromatic. Round and concentrated on the mid palate with many layers. Autosuggestion or not, there is a mini-Malconsorts thing happening here. The wine finishes with minerals and serious, defined tannins. A real winner.
