Alex Gambal left the world of real estate in the USA to pursue his dream. After attending viticultural school in Beaune in 1997 he began assembling his own domaine. And that is no simple task!
I tasted several of Alex's wines at the Grands Jours de Bourgogne. Alex was looking for a new Australian importer and I arranged to meet him in his winery the following week where I tasted through the range of 2010's.
Several things struck me. The quality of wines was extremely high. They were fresh, vibrant, complex and spoke of their terroir. Alex is also a good guy and that makes doing business and understanding the philosophy easier and more fun.
However, the number one thing that impressed me was his 2010 Latrieres-Chambertin Grand Cru. This wine had not been offered for tasting at the Grands Jours. I had tasted hundreds of 2010 Burgundies over the last week from all the prestigious appellations but this wine rang a bell. It was something very special. The problem was that Alex's wine are popular and virtually everything had been reserved. With a little gentle coaxing Alex managed to find a little wine for us to offer.
I don't often rave about a wine but this is one Burgundy I would like everyone to try. So to introduce the wine, and Alex Gambal to our portfolio, we offer the wine at a very special price. Our normal Pre Arrival Price is $225.00. For this week only, you can buy this Grand Cru for just $199.99. Once the wine arrives it will be $265.00. You have no excuse for not buying a bottle or two!

My note: This was one of the most delightful wines of my last trip. Latricieres-Chambertin can, all too often, be a little light and lacking complexity. This cuvee, made from a small patch of old vines high on the slope, delivers that rare combination of power, style and lightness. Jasper Morris in Inside Burgundy quotes Faiveley and Rossignol-Trapet as using the French term arien to describe their Latricieres, a word that sits somewhere between airy and ethereal.
This wine certainly is both intense and light on its feet, lacy in structure, with a gentle sweetness of fruit seen in the best Burgundies. The finish is very fine and long. I have written stylish and that sums up this terrific wine.
It is a beautiful wine with the balance that makes it very pleasing to drink now, but with the structure to allow the wine time to develop those gorgeous nuances the vineyard is capable of. 93-94 Points
The 2010 Gambal wines arrive in just over a week. The shipment includes a little of the brilliant 2010 Latricieres-Chambertin and some other fine bottlings including Corton-Charlemagne, a must-try Clos Vougeot, delicious Puligny-Montrachet and a "Potentially terrific" (Burghound) Meursault Genevrieres (great to compare with the Latour-Giraud for those smart buyers who purchased this wine).
