The Splendour of Ruchottes-Chambertin - Two Wonderful 2015's

Style and grace - Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Ruchottes-Chambertin is one of the smallest Grand Crus with a total area of just 3.30 hectares (compare that to Chambertin 12.90 hectares and Clos de Beze 15.40 hectares).

The vineyard is divided into two parts - an upper and lower - with the added element of a Clos in the upper part. There does not seem to be any great difference in style or quality, although I have heard some winemakers say that the Clos is a little too shadowed by the forest above.

The name Ruchottes comes from the small rocks found in the soil which add minerality and freshness to the wine.

Ruchottes is one of the Grand Crus with the fewest owners - just 8 (compared to around 80 in Clos Vougeot) - and we are delighted to have two of the smallest in our portfolio.

Domaine Marchand-Grillot are the smallest owner with just 0.077 hectares (number 8 on the map above). Not much larger than that is Domaine Henri Magnien with 0.16 hectares (two parcels marked number 6). These tiny holdings mean production is very small and special barrels must be made each year to accommodate the wine.

Gevrey-Chambertin is the star of the 2015 vintage and both wines beautifully express the character of the vineyard and vintage. Needless to say with such tiny production we have very limited quantities available.

For the next week we offer both wines at a 25% Pre Arrival Discount. They make a wonderful pair for those interested in comparing makers from this hard-to-find Grand Cru.

Marchand-Grillot Ruchottes Label Darren Harris: Marchand-Grillot are the smallest owner of Ruchottes-Chambertin with a tiny 0.077 hectares. From this they make one barrel. In 2015 they had to have a barrel made especially for the cuvee and in the end they had a mere 408 bottles. Red fruits, oak, minerals. Closed to start but with air the wine begins to reveal its charm. It is very complex, multi-layered, yet at the same time very fine. It is energetic and fresh, sleek and long with a serious peacock's tail. Whilst Chambertin can be a blocker buster, Ruchottes is more about elegance and this wine has it in spades. If you are fortunate enough to secure some of this rare wine you will need to display some patience.
Domaine Henri Magnien Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2015

Chezeaux Boudots
Domaine Jerome Chezeaux Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots 2014
11 bottles left
Boudots lies adjacent to Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Malconsorts. A few metres separate the two climats (there is not even a road dividing them). Jasper Morris MW says "Through it is clearly a Nuits-St-Georges, one can see some comparisons with its Vosne-Romanee neighbour. Boudots makes striking, full bodied, almost sensual wines which 'vibrate', according to Etienne Grivot. The bouquet should have some lifted, floral notes while the palate may well contain some black-fruit flavours."

Darren Harris: Bright garnet. A super expressive nose of red fruit, earth, sauvage, Chinese tea and spice. The palate is rich and very seductive with a tangy mineral mid palate. There is a sappiness and one cannot help ask if this is a theoretical blend of NSG and Vosne-Romanee as it expresses so many of the characters of both. The mid palate is serious Vosne - the tannins of the finish are more Nuits. This is a lovely wine with a juicy middle and a long structured, saline finish.
