Domaine des Chézeaux owns nearly 60% of Griotte-Chambertin (1.57 hectares) as well as vines in Clos St-Denis, Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Charmes, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaut St-Jacques and Cazetiers and Gevrey villages.
While Domaine des Chézeaux sells wine under its own label, it does not work the vines or make the wines. The Griottes-Chambertin, Clos St. Denis, Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Charmes have all been produced by Laurent Ponsot under a metayage arrangement. Ponsot leases the vines and one third of the finished wine is given to Chezeaux as payment.
These wines are identical to those bottled under the Ponsot label (simply one third of the bottled wines are returned to Chezeaux). In fact the bottles bear the name Ponsot molded on the base, the same modern synthetic cork and the label states "Eleve, vinifie et mis en bouteille par le Domaine Ponsot". Only the label design is different!
Late last year I was treated to a barrel sample tasting of the four Ponsot-produced wines. The wines were drawn off by Laurent and I can honestly say they were the best Ponsot wines I have ever tasted. It was a rare experience as I have not seen any tasting notes published for these wines to date.
If you are a fan of Ponsot wines you should not miss today's offer for Domaine de Chezeaux. The Chambertin (made by Ponsot) and Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers (made by Berthaut) have completely sold out.
At the time of writing we have the following left:
28 bottles Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru
10 bottles Clos St-Denis Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru
21 bottles Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes
Prices for the Griotte-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny are much the same as 2014 which makes them serious bargains. Please act quickly as quantities of 2015 are very limited.
