Quinta do Noval Vintage Port 2014. Excellent reviews

Noval 2014 VP Header
"At Quinta do Noval, the wine itself makes the decision: if we consider that the year has produced a great wine [or a great batch of wine], if the quality is there, then we declare - regardless of whether or not there are significant quantities available, and regardless of whether or not there is market demand.  It is an almost eccentric compulsion driven by our conviction that we must do the right thing. This is how we have always operated, and we will continue to do so: we consider that it is our duty to pay tribute to the magic of the wines from this unique vineyard." Christian Seeley, Quinta do Noval

Quinta do Noval, unlike the other famous names of the Port world, is a single estate, a single vineyard. The larger Port houses need the region as a whole to have enjoyed superb vintage conditions in order to declare a harvest. This is often because they buy a large portion of their fruit and therefore cannot control the viticulture (except at any Quintas that they own). Only with a grower's attention to detail in the vineyard and a strict selection, can a producer hope to outperform a vintage. Secondly, the large houses need to produce a minimum quantity if they declare a vintage under their main brand - in order to supply their significant markets. These two factors make it very difficult for a traditional Port shipper to declare a vintage in anything but an exceptional and even year. Things are different at Quinta do Noval. Firstly, controlling every aspect of their viticulture is an obvious advantage in challenging years and secondly, they have no issues in making a declaration even when the quantities are tiny, when only a small part of the vineyard, or even a few barrels, stand out as 'vintage quality'. Noval's philosophy is as refreshing as it is admirable and perfectly logical. If the quality is there, then it should be bottled! In 2014 there was some beautiful fruit harvested across the region early on, then the rain hit making things much more tricky. Noval made a strict selection and has produced a small release of a magnificent wine.
The 2014 Quinta do Noval is a single estate wine drawn from finest vineyard parcels. It's the traditional Noval blend of Touriga Nacional (roughly 50%), Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Francisca and Sousão, from Noval's hillside vineyard on the slopes of the Douro's Cavadinha tributary. The vines at Noval always give Ports of tremendous finesse and purity. Ports that can be treated as 'wines'. The 2014 is a wonderfully layered, elegant and perfumed Noval - surprisingly supple now - yet with plenty of fine grained tannins ensuring longevity. It's perhaps a more approachable wine than Noval's two other recent declarations (2012 & 2013), although its ability to improve over decades in the cellar is assured. As always, the grapes were trodden by foot and fermented in Noval's granite lagares, with the temperature held at 28ºc. The wine was then matured for 18 months in old oak barrels of 640 litres.

James Suckling:This beautifully perfumed wine has all the tannins that will allow it to age over many decades. It also offers the rich blackberry, dark plum and great structure that will support that aging. As so often, Noval has released a vintage when other major producers have held back. But this powerful wine fully justifies the decision. Drink from 2025 for the fruit, 2030 for the complexity
