1976 Beaune Premier Crus. From the ex-Presidents stash!

Bouchard 1976 Beaune Header 2
Two 41 year old Beaune Premier Crus - from the ex-Presidents stash!
Bouchard 1865 Volnay Have you tasted serious aged Burgundy? Many aficionados will tell you that in good years Burgundy does not reach its drinking window until it is 20 plus years old. In powerful vintages you can double that. Those who have attended our old Burgundy dinners will know how glorious wines can be at 60, 70 or even 80 years of age. Possibly the best bottle of wine I drank last year was an 1865 Volnay 1er Cru Santenots from Bouchard Pere et Fils. It was nothing less than remarkable.

So it is with that in mind that today I offer two aged reds from the same domaine. They are not quite as venerable as the Volnay Santenots Bernard Herve above but both have seen considerable time in the cellar. And a very good cellar at that. These wines have come from the personal cellar of former Bouchard President Bernard Herve. I can't imagine he would bother putting down anything but the best.

We have two Beaune's from the 1976 vintage. This year was ripe and powerful with big tannins. But 41 years in the bottle have seen the tannins mellow and the vintage drinks very well largely due to the preserving effects of these tannins.

Beaune 1er Cru Clos de la Mousse 1976
Landed Price $399.00
Pre Arrival Price $339.00

Bouchard Mousse Label A monopole of Bouchard Pere et Fils. The oldest trace of Clos de la Mousse dates back to 1220, when it was bequeathed to the church of Notre Dame de Beaune by cannon Edme de Saudon. During the Revolution, this fine vineyard became divided up. During the 19th century, the Bouchard family bought several vineyards of this delicate cru to obtain exclusivity. The 3.36 hectares of Clos de la Mousse were brought together on the 13th April 1872 with the acquisition by Antonin Bouchard of the last vineyard of "20 ares 28 centiares". This Premier Cru has been the monopoly of Bouchard Père et Fils ever since. The surrounding wall can still be seen today.
