Cheron 2015 PA Header
A lovely array of Reds from the wonderful 2015 vintage
In the late 1930's, Paul Misset, Philippe Cheron's grandfather, acquired parcels of vines in the Vougeot and Nuits Saint Georges communes. Not being a wine-grower, he entrusted their management to tenant wine growers in Vosne-Romanée. Starting with these original parcels, Paul Misset's grandchildren, two generations later, have built up a wine domaine which today covers 5 hectares, spread over the Nuits Saint Georges, Vosne Romanée, Chambolle Musigny and Clos de Vougeot appellations.

The domaine's winery and cellars are located in the historical centre of Nuits Saint Georges. The vaulted 19th century cellars allow the wines to be aged in perfect conditions and the modern, efficient winery has recently been totally refurbished.

After working as technical director at Domaine Jean-Claude Belland in Santenay, Philippe Cheron took over the family estate in 2011. A trained engineer, he studied at the wine university in Suze la Rousse before gaining important experience making wine in the Rhône valley and then Burgundy. To round off this experience, he also took an agricultural training course at the Lycée Viticole in Beaune.

Whilst the domaine is small the vineyard holdings are quite lovely with appellations in Gevrey, Vosne and Chambolle as well as the Grand Cru Clos de Vougeot. And best of all prices are very reasonable.

Domaine Phlipe Cheron is not on the critics radar yet. There are no Burghound reviews. Rcently a group of us sat down and tasted the six cuvees and you will see my tasting notes below and on our website.

You may not know the name today but I am sure you will be hearing more about Domaine Philippe Cheron in the years to come.

Cheron Vougeot Label
Darren Harris:
Cheron's vines lie mid slope towards Echezeaux in the climat Baudes Hautes. The vines are very old having been planted when the land was purchased in 1934. The shallow clay-marl soils at the top and richness and minerality to the wine while the sandier soils at the bottom add a lift to the aromatics of the wine. The wine has great depth of colour. Intense nose with ripe dark fruits, a hint of new oak, a little earth. On the palate is where the wine shines. Not surprisingly it is the most complex of the tasting; there is real fruit intensity. Medium-full bodied with a gorgeous texture, almost a creaminess from the old vines. The tannins there on the finish are long and fine. This is a very stylish CV with impeccable balance.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnet 2015
Landed Price $178.50
Special Pre Arrival Price $133.95

Cheron Champonnets Label Darren Harris: Paler than the Seurees. Nose of earth, minerals, clove and raspberry. The wine is elegantly structured and quite light on its feet for 1er Cru Gevrey. More berry, earth and mineral on the palate. Balanced and very textured. The cooler site adding restraint. Certainly not a blockbuster but a deceptively well balanced wine that says a lot about Cheron's winemaking.

Chambolle-Musigny Clos de l'Orme 2015
750ml Landed Price $159.50
Special Pre Arrival Price $119.50

Cheron Orme Label Darren Harris: Clos de l'Orme is well sited being located is located below the 1er Crus Les Charmes and Les Plantes. Clive Coates says it "might almost merit premier crus status" but it lies a little too low on the slope to have gained promotion. Deeper in colour than Les Quarante Ouvrees. A complex nose of minerals, raspberry, pomegranate, violets, musk with a hauting note of middle eastern spice. Very aromatic. The palate is long and fine and the minerality of the wine shows through. The tannins are fine with a gentle firmness. I like this a lot!

Vosne-Romanee Les Barreaux 2015
Landed Price $155.50
Special Pre Arrival Price $116.50
39 available

Cheron Vosne Label Darren Harris: Les Barreaux, made famous in recent years by Domaine Anne Gros, is wonderfully sited lying above Richebourg and Vosne-Romanee Cros Parantoux and alongside Petit Monts and Beaux Monts. Like its big brothers it produces a deeply coloured wine and those with an interest in wines of yesteryear will be delighted to know that Les Barreaux played a big part in the legendary Henri Jayer's Village Vosne-Romanee. Dark in colour. Aromatic nose with blacker fruits than the two Chambolles. Spices and minerals. Concentrated with plenty of extract and an underlying coolness. Quite muscular - more Richebourg than Romanee-St-Vivant in style. This is a serious lieu-dit which will age magnificently. And it is extremely well priced.

Chambolle-Musigny Les Quarante Ouvrees 2015
Landed Price $147.95
Special Pre Arrival Price $110.95
11 available

Cheron Quarante label Darren Harris: The French term 'ouvrée' is a centuries-old unit of measurement in Burgundy. It refers to the amount of land one man could work in a day. Cheron's Les Quarante Ouvrees is an assemblage of twelve different parcels in Chambolle-Musigny, two-thirds of which have a vineage of 60+ years. The majority of the fruit comes from the lieu-dits Condemennes and Clos des Ormes adjoining the 1er Cru Les Charmes. Aromatic Chambolle nose of red fruits. Juicy flavours of raspberry, strawberry and a touch of licquorice. The most accessible wine of the lineup providing enormous immediate appeal but being from 2015 will age nicely.

Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrees 2015
Landed Price $127.50
Special Pre Arrival Price $95.50
16 available

Cheron Seuvrees label Darren Harris: Les Seuvrees lies right on the Morey border below the Grand Cru Mazoyeres-Chambertin. A deeply aromatic nose with a sense of structure. A real surprise package on the palate. Less earth and more plums than the Champonnets. Cool. Powerful, restrained and with fine, long tannins. For a lieu-dit this has real depth and presence. I have said before that I think Gevrey-Chambertin was the standout commune in 2015 and this wine supports my thoughts. Terrific quality for the price. Bravo!
